We wanted to stay somewhere with a yard, since Batumi mostly seems to offer apartments or flats in the Orbis buildings. Ilyas Guest House was just what we were looking for. It's a really lovely place, and we'd happily come back if we visit Batumi again. Ilyas is a very welcoming host who was always ready to help. He picked up my elderly parents at the airport for free, printed my tickets at work, and recalculated the room charge when I had to leave a little early, even though he didn't have to. His mother, Zaira, who owns the house, was also very warm and kept treating us to fruit. The place is a bit far from the center and its entertainment, but it's quiet compared with central Batumi, and the sea is close by. There are four supermarkets nearby just along the way to the beach. Across from the school near the house, there's also a family bakery with very tasty, inexpensive pastries. Two friendly dogs and a cat live there. The shared kitchen has enough room to cook and the necessary dishes and utensils. We read that the dogs caused fleas, but that wasn't the case for us, it was mosquitoes. There are a lot of them in Batumi because of the climate. Our room's windows faced a construction site. Construction seems to be everywhere in Batumi, and the city itself can be noisy, with people driving around at night playing loud music, for example. There's a bus stop by the house, but buses come infrequently. If you walk closer to the sea, across from Kachinsky Park, there's another stop with lots of routes. In the morning, it took about 20 minutes by bus to get to the port without traffic. You can easily pay on the bus with a Ukrainian PrivatBank card, and the fare is 1 lari.
