The Rock Hotel

The views from the Wisteria Terrace or lounge stretch across the bay to North Africa, and make this a lovely place to spend a couple of relaxing hours. The Rock Hotel has the history and high ceilings to give it a special atmosphere, and the British-style high tea fits right in. The service was top-notch, and the spread felt authentic, from the finely cut sandwiches to fresh scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam. It’s a Gibraltar landmark with plenty of classic colonial charm.

We wouldn’t recommend staying here. We booked the day before, mainly because the forecast called for 30° weather and we wanted the pool. At check-in, we found out it was closed for a private event, with no warning when we booked through the hotel website. Another private function had a DJ playing loudly until 2am, and the rooms definitely aren’t soundproofed. When I brought it up at checkout, the staff seemed unconcerned. They said the hotel doesn’t consider partial refunds or compensation for guest disappointment or disruptions. They offered pool access after checkout, but by then it was cold and raining, so the opportunity had passed. The hotel feels dated now, though perhaps it was good back in the day. The rooms are a decent size but nothing fancy, and the wall-mounted hair dryer looked about 40 years old and didn’t work. It might have been a four-star hotel in the 80s, but not in 2025.

The restaurant and bar terraces have great views, but our first 24 hours at the Rock hotel were underwhelming. The pool stayed closed for the afternoon even as the weather improved. Our room still hadn’t been serviced by 3pm, despite putting out the request sign at 10am, and we wanted privacy that afternoon. At breakfast, the waiter who greeted us was brusque, didn’t explain the options or how things worked, and gave us the impression he didn’t want to interact with guests. I emailed the hotel about these issues at the time and didn’t even get an acknowledgement or reply. We expected more from a hotel with this heritage and reputation.

We’d come as a family for a proper British afternoon tea, and The Rock did a superb job. The service and food were top-notch, with a lovely view of the port. We were more than an hour early and asked if they could serve us a little ahead of time, which the staff kindly did. The website said 3PM, while the menu said 4PM. Reception had the correct time, 4PM.
