The hotel itself was comfortable, clean, and had good service. My rating is lower because of what happened outside. We went sightseeing nearby, but local people threatened us, so we left and headed along another road that seemed safer. Near the police station, officers on standby stopped and harassed us, repeatedly demanding our passports even after we explained they were at the hotel and offered to take them there. They refused to accept a digital copy. In the end, I understood what they wanted and gave them $20, and they let us walk away immediately. In my experience, they were highly corrupt and looked for chances to pressure people for money, especially Asians with brown skin. The hotel deserved a better rating, but I deducted points because of the neighborhood.

The rooms are a decent size, but the AC doesn’t really cool the whole room. Its fins were broken, so I couldn’t direct the air toward the bed. Some staff tried hard to help with requests, while others seemed rude. When we asked for football, one person said the channel wasn’t working, but another put it on straight away five minutes later. Breakfast is basic, isn’t always ready on time, and can be cold.

I only stayed one night. The room was just okay, and service was slow. The rooftop restaurant and bar were good, with good food. The alcohol seemed spurious, but the local beer was good.

I’ve stayed here for the last two years, but this was my worst experience, and I’m not coming back. They didn’t clean my room or leave a fresh towel for the next day, saying they’d run out. The AC was leaking too. The worst part was showing my review to the person at reception and getting only a smile. Pathetic, shameless staff.

I went to the hotel on 26 October. Expedia, Skyscanner and other booking sites showed nice room pictures, and they encouraged me to book for $149. But when I arrived, they gave me a terrible, unclean room with no windows, nothing like what was shown online. It felt more like a jail cell than a hotel room. I left right away and booked a good five-star room at the Kaloum hotel just beside it for the same price, $150. Those Grand Hotel people charged my credit card and refused to refund me. Please stay away.
