The staff were kind and clearly tried their best, but I can’t overlook how disappointing the rest of the stay at Sofitel Malabo Sipopo Le Golf was. We found bed bugs in the bed, which is unacceptable at any hotel, especially one with a luxury brand. The property is far away and poorly located, and the promised free airport pickup and drop-off never happened. Wi-Fi was barely usable, around 1mb upload and download, and the gym was old, in terrible shape, and hardly usable. Food across the property was ridiculously overpriced, and breakfast alone was extortionate. This was easily the worst value hotel we’ve stayed at. I almost never write a negative review, and this is the first time I’ve felt I had to. If it were the last hotel on earth, I’d still seriously consider camping outside.

The spot by the water is nice, but the property itself is terrible. Check-in was difficult and turned downright argumentative. The staff seemed uninterested in the guests. There are plenty of good hotels in Malabo, so pick one of those.

I stayed from 15th May to 12th June, and some things did go well. Check-in was smooth because my team had arrived a day earlier to help arrange it, and I appreciated that the staff seemed friendlier and more positive. Still, several problems were left unresolved during my long stay, especially disappointing as an Accor Gold member. The gym was a letdown: poor internet, no music, too few towels, no proper water station, no sanitiser, and no yoga mats. In my room, there was visible seepage, stained cushions, and a fridge and sockets that didn’t work properly. The cooling was poor, and there were no pillow options, which matters on a longer stay. Even in a suite there were no fruits or basic condiments. Breakfast hasn’t changed in over 6 years. The bread feels dated, there were no local fruits such as banana and mango, and no natural yogurt. Asking to have an orange cut from the buffet was met with reluctance. Staff didn’t seem to know what cold coffee or lemonade was. Ice cream and simple desserts would be easy additions. My 20,000 Accor points took 3-4 days to apply to the booking, though this should be confirmed quickly. At check-in there were no Gold-tier welcome amenities such as water, fruit, or chocolates; those only arrived two days later. I’d also asked for a higher-floor room but wasn’t offered options or flexibility. As of 14th June, the points for my stay from 15th May to 12th June still hadn’t been credited, which affects my ability to redeem them for future stays. I hope the feedback helps with improvements. Sofitel should reflect elegance, comfort, and thoughtful hospitality more consistently.

The hotel was very nice and clean, and the staff were really good. Conception, the new girl at breakfast, brought a fresh energy to the place. She was polite, always smiling, and ready to help whenever we needed something. Great job, keep it up! The new chef is amazing too, always polite, and the food has improved since he arrived.

I came for Sunday brunch but didn’t stay at the hotel. There was a wide variety of dishes, and most of what I tried tasted good. The flies, though, were everywhere, landing on everything, so I had to be careful about what to eat. We repeatedly asked the waiters to light candles or incense to drive them off, but they seemed completely unbothered, inattentive, and unhappy. With all those flies, I’d most likely not return for brunch. It could be a lovely weekend getaway: the hotel feels like a mini-resort, with a golf course, nice beach access, and a good pool. Such a shame about the flies.
