The plants and trees around the building were a real highlight for me, and there are a few well-behaved cats around too. Inside, the apartments are clean, with a balcony or terrace in each one, and most look onto a quiet side street. I liked having a separate bedroom away from the living room and kitchen nook, so the rest of us could make a salad or omelet while someone slept. The one drawback was getting air to circulate in the bedroom. Even with the windows open at night, it was difficult. We’d been to Katerini Apartments once before, and I hope we’ll return. This time my trip from Heraklion to Rethymno had a transport hiccup. If you’re taking the bus, book those tickets ahead. The hosts were incredibly kind and waited for me at reception until 1 a.m. I was so grateful. And give the bar downstairs a try. There are plenty of nice choices even if you don’t drink alcohol.

Our room looked out onto a pretty street lined with shops, restaurants, and bars. It was clean and well kept, and I’d recommend the place for couples or friends.

I came for the cocktail bar overlooking the street. Finding an Aperol spritz with the right fizz had been surprisingly hard, but they got it right here. The twin waitresses were lovely and the service was great. If you’re after a proper drink, come by.

The pool is nice for a quick dip, though it’s not really set up for lounging. The apartments are comfortable and simply decorated, with what you need, although the kitchen could use a few more things if you plan to cook. You’re right on the main road in Platanes, with a bus stop outside and supermarkets, restaurants, and tourist services close by. The beach is only a few minutes on foot. It’s not my kind of beach, with a mix of coarse sand and pebbles, plenty of waves, and not much to see, but others may enjoy it. I’d recommend the hotel.
