Popi

Stayed three nights recently with a group of friends. The staff were lovely, and the location is ideal. The hotel bar is a nice extra. Rooms are a little dated, but for the price I can't complain. 100% recommend.

The hosts, Popi and her family, were lovely and helpful, and felt genuinely themselves rather than putting on a show for guests. A snack bar with breakfast is run by the family; the selection may seem small, but the prices are even smaller, close to supermarket prices for drinks. The location is peaceful while still close to everything. It's 200 hundred m from the main street, with authentic tavernas behind Popi rather than along that street, and a few hundred meters from different stretches of the long beach. There's a well-kept garden, which is rare in the village, especially near the main street and beach, plus a clean pool that looks just like the picture. Those are real advantages in such a touristy area. The accommodation is split across three attractive buildings with almost no signs of wear. I saw studios and one-bedroom apartments, both very clean, with good flooring, old-style Cretan wooden furniture rather than composite materials, well-equipped kitchenettes and quite large balconies. It all suits the feel of a place in Creta if you want to feel like you're in Creta rather than at home or in a modern, fancy city. There's a good quality-to-price ratio for anyone looking for peaceful time after trips and beach visits, or to relax on free sunbeds in the sun or under the trees, by the pool or at the bar tables.

I've travelled around the world several times and stayed in many hotels, and Popi Hotel Appartments was by far the worst I've been to. The maids basically broke into the apartment while we were inside after we refused service. One of them even pushed us. The toilet flush didn't work either, and the pool was atrocious. Worst experience of my life. Please don't book at that hotel!

Everyone was really friendly and made us feel good. It's the best accommodation, and I'd definitely like to visit again if I come to Crete. The beach and many restaurants are nearby, so it's handy for getting around. Air conditioning costs 5 euros per night, and it's well worth paying.
