That Mediterranean view is something else. Sitting there with a drink and a bite to eat, I started wondering if I really had to go home. At Tarra Bar, the downstairs bar is easygoing and fun. I came for one drink and ended up with new friends, unexpected laughs, and a cocktail that made me wonder if Sifis is the Greek James Bond of bartending. Sandals are welcome, and nobody cares how many olives you've eaten. The upstairs taverna was just as memorable. I've traveled to 40+ countries, and this was the best food I've had in Crete. It all tasted like it came from a grandma who knows a thing or two about gastronomy. The grilled meat was perfect, the salads so fresh they could wake you up, and the olive oil was so good it might be illegal somewhere. I didn't just have dinner, I started a long-term relationship with a plate of lamb. If you're hiking through Agia Roumeli and fancy food or a drink, walk right in. The sea breeze is welcoming, but Sifis and Andreas are even more so. Two brothers running the place, apparently without a trace of stress.

After the Samaria Gorge Trail, we were glad to stop for a meal here. The seaview was nice, service was good, and the price was low. The food wasn't amazing, and it came out so quickly that we would've liked more time to enjoy our drinks.

After walking 18 km down the Samaria Gorge and staying at Tarra rooms, we were hungrier than ever and looking for the best traditional food in Agia Roumeli. There are so many places to choose from, and seeing no one eating at Taverna Tarra at that moment made me a little worried. Once we sat down and ordered, though, the meal turned out to be the best culinary experience I could have imagined after that hike. Have a look at my pictures and judge for yourself. The service was kind and lovely, as Cretans are, xenofilia and taleme my friend ;).

We stayed in the rooms too, and they were really clean and comfortable, with fantastic views. The Tavern and the Bar feel like a peaceful little gem in the middle of Agia Roumeli, with an excellent view and service. The meat dishes were the best you could try, and the food is completely bio, made with natural ingredients and excellent Greek cooking.

After hiking through Samaria gorge, this is a nice place to sit down with a beer. The grilled octopus was amazing, and the prices were really good.
