Ammos Residence

The rooms are spacious and clean, and the accommodation is right on the beach. The outdoor barbecue is lovely. It’s quite isolated, and the nearby airport means you can hear planes taking off, though it’s surprisingly not too bad. There are no flights at night, after 11-12 pm.

A great spot to unwind, with rooms right by a west-facing beach. You could also hire a car and explore the island. The room was reasonably equipped for self-catering, though room 24 could use a chopping board and a decent knife. The owner lives on site and was friendly and accommodating. I rarely return to the same place, but I reckon I’ll make an exception here.

We’ve stayed at Ammos Residence twice now, and our two weeks there in May were lovely. The apartment was spotless and had almost everything we needed. A microwave would have been handy, but there’s an electric cooker, so it was a small omission. From our top-floor apartment, number 32, we could watch the beach, sea and sunsets from the balcony when the sky was clear. All the apartments face the beach and sea, but number 32 is on the highest floor. Some mornings we could even spot where turtles had come ashore overnight to lay eggs. In May the beach is nearly yours alone, and the weather was good apart from two cloudier days out of 14. The balcony gets gorgeous sunshine from about 3pm, though evenings can turn cool once the sun goes down. Everyone working there, including the owner, was polite and helpful. I celebrated my 61st birthday while we were away, and the owner brought us homemade cheese pie, while the manager made banoffee pie. It was a lovely touch. The beach bar opens for drinks and snacks when the main season starts in June. They were getting things ready during our stay, but it didn’t bother us. We’d say a car is needed, since the nearest restaurant is about 2km away. The airport is very close, though in May there are only about 4 flights in and out each day, so it wasn’t an issue. The sea view more than made up for it. We’re planning to return in 2026.

A warning about booking: the owner no longer works with Hotels.com, and when we arrived after a late-night flight, he had no record of our reservation. He kindly found us a room anyway. Hotels.com did nothing after I complained, not even taking the listing down, so future guests could end up stranded too. As for the stay itself, this is so good that it’ll be the first place I’ve ever returned to after travelling. It’s right on a sizeable sandy beach, and every room and balcony faces west over the sea, so sunsets are right in front of you. Our room was spacious and airy, with enough storage and equipment for a long stay and self-catering. There are turtle nests on the beach as well. The airport is an easy 7-minute drive. The main town takes about 20 minutes by car, while nice restaurants are around 5 minutes away. It’s not especially close to the island’s main sights, but Kefalonia is small and traffic was calm in early October. That distance makes the place quiet and restful, just right for getting away from the rat race.
