You can feel the history everywhere, in every stone. This is an incredible place, with cultural heritage that belongs to Greece and the wider world, and it’s beautiful and well maintained. It gets far busier than other attractions during the holidays. In the hottest part of the day, it may be closed.
Bring comfortable shoes and something to drink, because there’s quite a climb and the grounds are huge. There’s a lot to see, so allow at least two hours. It’s a must-see in Athens. We got lucky on March 6, when most museums and historic sites were free, but otherwise buy tickets ahead.
The Acropolis was breathtaking! Visiting this incredible historic site was a truly rich experience. After living in Athens for three weeks, I finally decided to go. The €30 ticket felt a little expensive, but as soon as I reached the entrance to the Propylaea, it seemed worth it. High above the city, the site has stunning panoramic views of Athens and offers an unforgettable look into ancient history. The walk up to the Parthenon is quite a hike, but along the way you find different viewpoints, the Odeion of Herodes Atticus, panels with historical information, and lots of cute, friendly cats 🥰. We visited on a Saturday afternoon in January. It was crowded, but we still got some good photos. I recommend arriving around 3pm, so you have time to walk up, enjoy the scenery, and watch the sunset from the top of the hill. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip because the marble paths can be slippery. Bring water and sunglasses just in case. Most of all, please don't litter and show respect for this amazing site, since guards will be watching. Whether you're passionate about history or just traveling casually, the Acropolis is a must-see in Athens and a powerful reminder of Greece's incredible cultural heritage.
We went in March, during the off season, when entry is free on the first Sunday of the month, and it was fantastic. I’d absolutely recommend going on a free day. We arrived about 10 minutes before opening and got through the gates around seven minutes after they opened. Our friends came a couple of hours later and found no queue, though there were more people up top. The Agora has the same free ticket arrangement, so don’t miss it.
There’s a lot to learn here, and I found it extremely interesting, but expect to share the visit with plenty of people. Even outside peak times, the crowds were substantial. I went in April early in the morning, before they really built up, and the weather was lovely. Go early, get tickets in advance, and be ready for crowds. I hear summer can get very hot.
