Radisson Blu Park Hotel, Athens

The call before our trip was the low point. The person on the phone struggled with English, wasn't much help, and hung up before sorting out our question. Once we were there, though, we had a great stay. The hotel staff were warm and helpful, especially the service desk team. Our spotless, well-kept room looked out at the Acropolis, and breakfast offered lots of good-quality choices. We enjoyed the sauna, though the pool was closed, which was disappointing. A jacuzzi would've been a nice extra.

Breakfast was a real bright spot, with lots of well-prepared choices, and the staff were very kind and accommodating. The rest of the stay was more mixed, and I plan to choose another hotel next time. It takes a long walk or a taxi or subway ride to get to Plaka, and the surrounding area wasn't as appealing as I'd hoped. The room was decent, but the deteriorating walls made it seem poorly maintained. We asked for a rubber floor mat for an elderly guest, but they didn't have one and never followed up. Internet was frustrating too. It didn't work properly, and I couldn't make outside calls from the room.

I booked five nights and almost looked for somewhere else when I found the ninth-floor restaurant closed. The rooftop restaurant had no lift access, so I couldn't get there in my wheelchair. I raised it with the restaurant manager and asked them to contact the hotel manager. She came to see me, understood the problem, arranged for the restaurant to reopen, and offered a room upgrade because of the trouble. I was unsure, but accepted and moved rooms. To my surprise, it reopened that evening, giving me somewhere to bring guests during my stay. The service from both managers was impeccable. Every dish I tried was excellent, and I'll remember the Pastitsiada from Corfu fondly. Get it if you visit. Each morning a lovely young woman welcomed us at breakfast, which was first class too. A memorable stay.

Back for my second stay this month. The staff are friendly, helpful, and professional, and breakfast is good, with lots to choose from, including salmon and fresh vegetables. The location works well for me, next to the park and near the metro. The center is around a 25-30 minute walk if you need it. Some rooms have been updated and some could use a refresh, but they look good overall and have what you need: a kettle, small fridge, slippers, and even an iron. It's cozy, too.
