This was the worst place I’ve ever booked. I arrived just before midnight, but the doors were locked. Someone at a nearby bar sent me to the bar across the alley, where I got a key. Inside there was no air conditioning, and the place was full of wood with an old varnish smell. We saw lizards as we walked in the dark to our room on another level. It was extremely hot, and the air conditioning barely worked. The fixtures were old, and everything smelled old and varnished. We went out for a bite and got back around 2 a.m. I thought I’d just sleep there and find somewhere else in the morning, until I sat up and saw a bed bug crawling on the pillow. I grabbed my things and left. It’s hard to find accommodation at 2 a.m., so we went to the airport and waited until 8 a.m. for our rental car. While there, I booked another place for the next night. A total nightmare. I contacted the host to say we were leaving, but they marked us as a NO SHOW in Booking.com. I can’t even leave a review there, and Booking.com hasn’t resolved it. The host didn’t respond to Booking.com, and Booking.com still refuses to change the status from no show. This experience has put me off Chania altogether. Awful, awful place.

We had a balcony room with a wonderful view over the old town. The rooms felt authentic, and everything was clean and great. We did lose water for 1-2 hours before checkout. It was also very loud at night, so if you’re not a light sleeper, it’s nothing special.
Our room was very hot even though it had air conditioning, and the downstairs door was broken. Whenever we came back, we had to ask for help at the cafe next door. We also had three huge suitcases, and it was difficult carrying them up to the third floor. The hotel description never mentioned there was no elevator. There was no communication from the hotel about how to check in. I’ve been trying for more than a week to get the invoice, without success. I’ve sent five messages through Booking.com and made four calls. The person I spoke with was very polite and kept saying it would be sent after we hung up. Update: after two weeks, still no invoice.
The sheets were stained with blood, and the place was infested with bed bugs. Disgusting. We fled in the middle of the night to find another hotel, and the owner never even called back to apologize.
I barely saw any staff during my whole stay, which felt a little strange, almost like being in a haunted guest house. The rooms were clean, though, and the hotel is right in the city center, so I can’t complain.
