Odyssey House Chania

We only had three nights here and wished we could’ve stayed longer. The hosts were so gracious, they made it feel like visiting family. The space was large, comfortable, well equipped, and full of interesting historical details, with good views and a great location.

This was a good value base on the quieter side of over-touristy Chania. I had a severe asthma attack from all the smoking and vaping around town, with clouds of it everywhere, and this was a nice place to hide out and recover. The owners, Costas and Xenia, are super sweet and helpful. Costas is widely read, knows a lot of local history, and speaks multiple languages. I had the smallest solo studio, with a small, sweet private balcony overlooking old buildings, limited but pretty sunset views, and a nice spot for breakfast away from the smokers. The room has no washing machine, but otherwise it’s fully equipped, even with a Boden coffee press, iron and board, and everything needed for a tiny kitchenette, including pots, pans, and a fridge. It seems good for a long stay, and many guests return for years and stay for months. A note on noise: not every room is as quiet as mine. Some overlook a restaurant with Greek music in the evenings, though they don’t play too late. My only negative was the somewhat small shower.

I had a really nice walking tour with Costa, covering historical artifacts from different eras. Afterward, we had homemade lemonade from the lemon tree in their yard. I didn’t rent a room, though the rooms looked very nice, so maybe we’ll try them next time.

The house is about 200 years old, but it has modern comforts and was comfortable and nicely decorated. We had air conditioning, a washing machine, a full cooker, a microwave, and all the bits we needed. Towels for both the house and beach were provided, which was a thoughtful touch. We stayed as a family from 13 - 20 June 2023. Costa and Xenia were warm, friendly hosts, and Costas offered morning walking tours if we wanted one. He also had a basic language guide that came in handy. We had a thoroughly lovely stay at Odyssey House in Chania, Crete, and I can highly recommend it.
