We ended up leaving and finding somewhere else for our last night in Diakopto. In the rush, we left some of our belongings behind, and getting back in the next day took much longer than promised: the owner said he’d be there in about fifteen minutes, but arrived roughly an hour later. It’s a shame, since we liked Diakopto itself, but this was a horrible stay. I’d avoid it. The apartment wasn’t terrible, and the hot water did work once we kept the relevant switch on. It was also about a five-minute walk from the center, which was handy. But calling it “deluxe” seems like a stretch. We saw two cockroaches the first night and three the next. The owner acted as if this was new when we called, though other reviews mention the same problem. He brushed us off and said someone would come check the following day. There were issues from the start. Google Maps didn’t make the place easy to find because the listing on booking.com used the name Eco Diakopto instead of Suites Diakopto. When we called, the owner gave us a number that turned out to be a different house, so we disturbed the people living there. He said he’d send someone to help, and he did. His manner was cold and nearly rude, though the woman who let us in was much friendlier. She told us they had no POS and took cash only, as others have also reported. In front of us, she cancelled the booking.com reservation and said we could pay after getting cash from an ATM, though there aren’t many ATMs in Diakopto. Cancelling the reservation also meant we couldn’t leave a review on booking.com. It raises an obvious concern about tax evasion.

The apartment was filthy and nothing like what had been advertised, including the address and equipment. The listing on booking.com gave the wrong address, 313 (shown in the last photo); the actual address is 175, about a five-minute walk from the beach, where we had wanted to stay. Communication was extremely difficult because the owner doesn’t speak English. He just kept repeating, “Problem? Problem?” He charged my card, then marked it invalid on booking.com to avoid the commission. At 30€ a night, this dirty place was far too expensive. The owner is a cheater. Absolutely wouldn’t recommend it 🤮

I had to leave in the end. A friend and her husband, who are Greek, spent hours trying to get my payment returned. It may look like the cheapest option around, but it was the worst stay I could have had. I booked two nights in February 2023, since they wouldn’t accept a one-night stay. It’s a building divided into rooms, with no staff on site, no security staff and no secure door, especially worrying if your room is on the ground floor. My room was completely dusty, too. I called the number on the building, and a woman arrived about 25 minutes later. After checking me in at noon, she took the full amount in cash without giving a receipt and left. There was no heating or internet, so I tried calling from 3 pm until 8 pm. After my second call, the owner kept hanging up. I had to ask my friends for help, and eventually moved out.

The booking was cancelled in my app, which meant I couldn’t leave a review there, but the next day the owner charged 137€ to my card anyway. That’s after telling me his “card was broken.” He ignored my calls, and when I tried from my wife’s phone, he said, “no speak English.” I’ll contact booking.com to report this and ask them to remove the listing. Avoid this person. I’d booked one night for two adults and three children through booking.com. On the morning we were due to arrive, the app asked me to update my card even though the details were correct. I called the owner, who said, “card broken only cash.” When we arrived, he said we’d have to stay in another of his apartments and follow him there by car. He said it wasn’t clean yet and had no WiFi. I wanted WiFi, to pay by card, and to stay in the apartment shown on booking.com, so I turned down the offer. He then claimed there was no WiFi anywhere in Diakopto. We later found that wasn’t true when we stayed at the very accommodating Panorama hotel for half the price.

The apartment was very dusty, and we got no receipt or cleaning during our stay. The prices aren’t real. I wouldn’t recommend it.
