The apartment looked inviting, but the owner’s behavior was unacceptable. We booked through booking.com for two friends, choosing a listing that said it had two separate beds. The description specified a double bed in the bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room, with no stated restriction on using the sofa bed. Because we knew this booking might be unusual, since an apartment for two is often assumed to be for a couple, we messaged ahead and asked them to prepare the sofa bed as well as the double bed. We explained that we were two friends and wanted separate beds to avoid awkwardness on arrival. The owner replied that bed linen would cost an extra 15 euros per night. In his view, a couple should share the double bed, and the extra bed wasn’t included unless we paid more. We explained that this wasn’t an extra guest, just two guests wanting to sleep separately, but he still said no. Booking.com representatives were surprised too, and offered to refund the unjustified extra charge the owner was demanding. On booking.com, a host can choose to list a double bed only, or say the apartment sleeps three and offer an extra bed for a fee during booking. The owner didn’t use that option, instead listing the apartment as having two separate beds. We’ve never encountered this kind of behavior. While preparing for this trip, we made the same request to several other apartments with a double bed and one or two sofa beds, and every one happily agreed without hesitation. We’ve booked through booking.com several times a year for many years and have never had an apartment owner behave this way.
