Popi was pleasant and helpful once I finally reached her, though by then I had already booked a room in the city. She took me to another hotel I chose and drove me around the area at no extra cost. I suppose that mini tour could count as reimbursement, since she refused to refund me. Don't expect your money back. The village is small and quaint, with amazing views, green hills, and an old-time feel. The coffee shops serve nice homemade pastries. It's quiet and homely, with cafes and taverns, and sits on the outskirts, about 25-30 minutes from the city. The hotel has stone walls, narrow entrances, small spaces and traditional character with a few modern touches. There's no receptionist or 24/7 support. Our arrival was a horrible experience. A taxi dropped us off in the dark and left, and we were stranded for hours until daybreak because nobody answered the listed numbers. Despite several being advertised as 24/7, no taxi would come back for us. Popi showed up after sunrise and eventually answered after many calls and texts. Don't stay here if you're arriving in Crete early. I booked through AMEX, which I rarely use for hotels, and should have checked other reviews first. The reservation incident and her refusal to refund really soured things. It definitely dampened our Greece trip, even if it won't define it.

The Cretan Houses in the Agios Mirones region felt more like a little resort than a set of rooms, with full-sized houses and incredible mountain views. I've rarely found anywhere so relaxing, and my stay there was a remarkable experience of Crete's culture. I'd highly recommend it. Popi is one of the kindest, most honest and caring people I met in Greece. She keeps going out of her way for everyone who stays with her.

We'd booked and paid for the traditional Cretan House through Expedia, but when we arrived at the hotel entrance, nobody was there to meet us. I managed to contact the owner, who said we couldn't check in. I asked Expedia to cancel, but the hotel wouldn't agree. We paid a lot and couldn't spend the night there. Be careful with this house, they are swindlers!

A striking, iconic house in a village setting, away from the crowds. The local people are friendly and generous, and the views stretch out all around. At Ethimiko taverna, the food is fit for a king even on a pauper's wages. Superb, highly recommended.
