The walk to the beach is at least 15 minutes. For the first two days, there weren’t any beach towels, so we used our shower towels. Air conditioning costs an extra 7 euros per day. We stayed seven days and had only cold water for our showers, with no hot water at all. We even got sick for two days, with a fever up to 39 degrees. Hospitality was poor too. The staff spoke almost no English, and it was hard to understand their very broken English. Breakfast had so few choices that we never used the buffet. At night, there were rats running around on the roof over my parents’ room by the pool, making noises. At first we thought they were stray cats, but when we went out to check, we saw two or three rats run away from the light.

When you arrive, they give you a rusty key to carry around. The beds are so hard it feels like sleeping on the floor, and the pillows barely feel like pillows. The bedside table is taller than the bed, and the lights flicker constantly. The bathroom is awful. The old, crusty door won’t close, the rusty key doesn’t work, and you have to hold the shower head yourself. The toilet is right beside the shower, so water gets everywhere. The sink splashes water everywhere too, and warm water lasts only about five minutes. There’s a tiny bathroom window that anyone can see through. The old, bulky TV doesn’t work, and it looks like an antique from the 1970s. There’s no duvet, just a dirty, thick blanket in the closet. The mini fridge is really noisy. There’s barely any room by the balcony door, and it takes 10 minutes to open it. People stare at you when you stand out there. The pool is green, with bugs in it because they don’t cover it, and the food is awful. Don’t come here.

The pool was one of the few parts I was happy with, and the sunrise from the balcony was lovely, though that view isn’t available in every room. The rest of the stay was uncomfortable. My room felt old and unclean, with marks inside and outside the fridge and what looked like an old stain on the bathroom floor. The shower head wasn’t fixed in place. Towels and sheets were stained, so I was glad I’d brought my own. In seven nights, I got one clean towel and the sheets weren’t changed once. Leaving the bathroom door open one time also brought a strong sewage smell into the room. There was noise from a rooster next door every morning, and even at the end of the hallway I could hear people talking in other rooms. Breakfast was very basic: bread, jam, cereal, vegetables, tea and coffee. On arrival, the elderly woman at reception charged me an unexpected cash “tax,” which seemed questionable. I wouldn’t suggest this hotel for families. It might suit people coming to Malia to party, but cleanliness, comfort and service all fell short.
