This impressive old mansion dates back to 1857 and has been very well preserved. Staying here gives you a lovely hotel experience while offering a sense of what life in a nineteenth-century mansion was like.

The building is beautiful, set in a lovely location with amazing lake views, and the staff were polite and helpful. The room and en-suite were very small, though. The sink was broken and leaking, and the tap was too long for it, so water dripped there too. The bathtub was blocked, with water rising to 20cm. The old wooden floorboards creaked with every step. We left after one night instead of staying for three.

The staff were friendly, smiley, and keen to help, and the room was spacious in a good spot near Kastoria’s old town. The bathroom was so tiny it was hard to use, the mattress was firm, and breakfast was basic, with no local produce, which was disappointing. Thankfully, since we were the only guests in the mansion, we could double up on duvets and pillows.

It’s a lovely furnished old mansion, but it wasn’t right for us. The bathroom was tiny, with the sink almost in the toilet, and you could only get out of the double bed on one side. We also got no welcome at all, unlike everywhere else we’ve stayed in Greece. We checked out without staying.

The staff really make this guest house, they were friendly and couldn’t have been more helpful. Vergoulas Guest House is a renovated traditional mansion overlooking Kastoria lake, with large, comfortable rooms. Breakfast was plentiful and served in an impressive stone-walled room. Anyone looking for somewhere to stay in Kastoria need look no further.
