Porto Katapola Pension

After five hours on the ferry from Milos, we arrived in Amorgos and could tell as soon as we stepped into the port that the island was something special. The calm of the land, the lovely sea and the kindness of the people meant a lot to us. Giannis and Porto Katapola pension are a wonderful example of that peaceful, welcoming spirit. It was our first visit to Amorgos, and Uncle Giannis greeted us so warmly. Since there was availability, he kindly upgraded us to a larger room with a garden view and balcony. He shared lots of tips about the island and made sure we were comfortable. We also got to play with his pet cat Polly in the garden. Thank you for hosting us, Uncle Giannis. I’ll always remember how warmly you welcomed us.

The rooms were comfortable and very affordable, with lovely outlooks in both directions. We spent three nights in the Cozy Double Garden View Room, then two in the Quadruple Sea View Room. From the sea-view balcony, watching the sun rise over Katapola was a joy. After busy days, we loved looking across the bougainvillea toward the mountains from the garden room. The rooms aren’t fancy, but they have what you need and make a great base for exploring Amorgos. Giannis was one of the best hosts we’ve had. His friendly, upbeat manner made us feel at home as soon as he welcomed us off the ferry. He gave us fantastic suggestions for visiting places, swimming, car hire and eating, including the best food we had on our Greek islands holiday. He was also very helpful when our ferry might have been cancelled because of high winds. I contacted him directly to ask about availability, and he replied within minutes. Communication was quick, easy and welcoming from the start. Thanks so much, Giannis. We miss you already and hope to return one day!

We stayed in the “Family Home,” a spacious two-bedroom house set a little back from the port, with a lovely terrace and balcony. The main pension is right on the waterfront and has fantastic port views. Giannis was a fantastic, friendly host who gave us loads of advice. Even though it’s just a one-minute walk from the ferry, he came to meet us when we got off the boat. There’s a great bakery right next door. For the best restaurant food, head up to the mountain village of Hora, about 8 Euros by taxi or 1.80 by bus.
