The beds were uncomfortable, and we could feel the springs. Some closets smelled damp, and the house wasn’t very clean. The villa was also full of cats lounging around, so we didn’t feel comfortable sitting on the sun loungers. When we asked to have them removed because there was a pregnant woman and a baby with us, she said we should have told her earlier and pointed to a notice saying animals were allowed. The platform, though, says pets aren’t allowed. Flies and bees were all over the pool, despite the owner saying it was disinfected after every booking, which we really don’t believe. Getting there was difficult too, with a narrow dirt road full of potholes for almost the whole way. We’d booked the villa for a friend’s bachelor party, planning to spend a few hours there. There were ten of us, and only five were meant to sleep over because there wasn’t actually room for everyone to stay. About an hour before check-in, the host called asking for another €150 in cash. He’d first said parties were expressly prohibited, then changed his explanation to say we hadn’t told him there would be extra people and that parties cost more. There’s even a sign in the villa saying it hosts all kinds of parties. He told us to cancel if we didn’t want to pay. The space itself is the only thing it has going for it. In the end, I wouldn’t recommend it. It felt like they just wanted to charge extra for parties, which many villas in Heraklion don’t allow, and take payment outside the platform. Unacceptable.

The outdoor area and its amenities looked beautiful, but we couldn’t really enjoy them. There were so many flies we couldn’t even set down a drink, let alone eat. We washed the patio and tables hoping that would help, but the problem continued. The pool had sphinxes in it, which made swimming impossible for us. Cats wandered over to where we were sitting and climbed on the sun loungers, even though the listing said pets weren’t allowed. Then the owner asked for extra money because more people had visited, though they weren’t staying overnight and there was no rule saying outside guests weren’t allowed. Such a shame, because a beautiful place doesn’t help much if you can’t enjoy your stay.

The flies in the outdoor area made it hard to spend time in the yard or pool, and several cats roamed freely, climbing on tables and chairs. That felt unhygienic for a place hosting guests. Our visit was for a bachelor party with ten people, though only four or five would stay overnight. The rules never said parties or bachelorette parties were prohibited, so we didn’t think to mention it beforehand. When the owner found out, the Airbnb manager called me. At first the reaction was forceful, with the manager saying parties were expressly prohibited. Then the explanation changed to say we should have informed them because the fee was different. We were left with no real option other than paying extra or having the reservation canceled, which we couldn’t accept. The experience was disappointing and fell short of what we expected.

I had my bachelor party at this villa, and all my guests were really happy. The owner was welcoming, upbeat, and ready to help whenever we needed him. He was friendly and smiling from the moment we met. The place was spotless and set in nature, away from the city bustle. One of the best places I’ve ever stayed. I’d definitely go back.

Villa Kalwaas was just right for celebrating my birthday with friends. It was clean, comfortable, and suited the party exactly as we’d hoped. The owner was excellent, friendly, helpful, and available whenever we needed anything. We all had a great time and would definitely visit again. I’d recommend it for all kinds of events.
