Creta Sun Apartments

I booked a room in the off season because I was traveling then, but when I arrived it wasn't ready and I was put somewhere different from what I had reserved. I didn't want to make a fuss, so I accepted it. Then the electricity went out for 3.5 hours, only in that location, while next door still had power. I stayed calm about that too. When the power came back, the room was freezing. There was no heating option, and it was 52F and raining outside. I took the key from the wall light socket, unlocked the door, and went out to call the owner to ask about heating. The door shut behind me, and I had no idea it would lock itself. In the US, locks need a key to lock them. The owner and his VERY AGGRESSIVE wife said I would have to pay EXTRA for heating and asked what I expected for what I paid, 37.45 Euro for one room. Manos, who was called the 'owner' but apparently wasn't, said they'd need to call a locksmith to open the door and that I'd have to pay. This is a HOTEL. It was dark, rainy, and 9pm, and all my things, including my phone, keys, and purse, were locked inside. He refused to call the police and told me to walk in the dark in a general direction and go find them myself. I couldn't find them. After I made my way back through the deserted village in the dark, a locksmith was there, and I had to pay 50 Euro in cash. In the USA, at least, a landlord or hotel has to heat a property to 66 degrees. It seems there may be no such law in Crete when renting hotel rooms. Also in the US, hotel doors can be opened in an emergency without the guest having to pay a locksmith. The way they dealt with the whole thing felt scary, uncalled for, and greedy.

There are two beaches close by, a sandy one down the hill and a pebbly one on the other side. A short walk also gets you to a lively beach stretch right in front of the landlord's shop. We found the landlord welcoming, friendly, and helpful. It's a great place for families, and we'd happily return. Thanks for making our stay enjoyable!
