Hotel Plaza

We had a nice holiday, and the staff we dealt with were friendly. The setting is lovely, with stunning views, and you can walk a short way in either direction from the hotel to reach restaurants and bars. Breakfast was fine, about what you'd expect from a Greek B&B. There are quite a lot of steps down to the pool, and even more to the beach, which would be difficult for anyone with limited mobility. The pool bar also shut at 18:00 every day, so we couldn't enjoy a drink there while watching the sunset. Our bathroom was very small, and the door was swollen and damaged because shower water soaked the floor and reached into the bedroom. The hotel is nice, though it could use some investment.

We've been visiting Kalymnos for over three years and have always found the island's people friendly and its food and drink fantastic. This visit to Hotel Plaza was a letdown, and we'll avoid it in future. We weren't hotel guests, so I can't comment on the rooms or facilities. We wanted a quick drink and sorbet before heading back to our apartment, but first had to catch the server's attention because he wasn't coming over. We ordered two ice cream frappes at €6 each and asked which sorbet flavours were available since the menu didn't say. I pointed to the menu as I usually do to help avoid a mix-up, and chose orange after he read the options. We waited 30 minutes. The table beside us ordered food and drinks and had theirs within five minutes. When our drinks finally came, the frappes were warm and half full, as if they'd been sitting for ages. There was also a can of drink we hadn't ordered, but no sorbet. The server clearly hadn't registered what I'd asked for. The service and wait were shocking, and the drinks were far below the quality I'd expect.

The breakfast was very basic, with little choice. More kinds of fruit would have helped, and the toaster either burned the bread or left it underdone. The rooms were average and hygiene was poor. I repeatedly found cockroaches in my room and reported them to the cleaner. She said she'd pass it to management and get back to me in half an hour, but I heard nothing all afternoon. The next day I went to management myself. They said they'd contact me to arrange a time to disinfect the room, but again I waited without hearing back. Poor service. The one clear positive is the location, overlooking Telendos and giving lovely sunset views.

I've stayed at Plazza five times on holiday and like it. There are rooms facing the sea, and you can take a short stroll to lots of tavernas. The pool has a bar where you can relax with a beer and snacks, and there's a short flight of steps down to the beach. The rooms facing the road can be noisy because of the bars opposite.
