The breakfast was excellent, and the quiet apartment in a historic building was lovely. It had all the amenities, even a bathrobe, and the kitchenette is shared with one other apartment. To find reception, look by the ATM as you enter the old town. If nobody’s there, try the Maona restaurant, to the left of the church on Mesta’s main historic square. I’d gladly return to this beautiful medieval town, a real pearl.

The Mastic Museum helped me understand the medieval mastic villages and how they developed. Mesta itself feels like a living museum, though there are no labels to explain what you’re seeing. It’s a great place to spend a morning or afternoon just wandering around.

I only stayed two nights and already wished I could have stayed much longer. The place has a lovely 15th-century feel, along with a simple, peaceful atmosphere and warm hospitality. Alexandria at reception is so lovely. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet escape.

The people were a big part of what made this stay so good. The receptionist and other locals in Mestá were warm, friendly and straightforward, a lovely example of the old Greek idea of filoxenía. My studio was in a beautifully restored building that still keeps its original medieval architecture. In room 202, the old stone and mortar ceiling has been preserved and looks great. It’s a medieval space with WiFi, a TV, a sound system, enough lighting and wonderful air conditioning, a relief after hot days exploring Mestá and southern Chíos. Natural light is limited, but that comes with the design of the studios. A few practical things: bring mosquito repellent and your own toiletries, since the studio only provides bars of soap. If you want tea or coffee, bring milk too. The studio supplies the tea and coffee. I’d recommend Chios, and I’d point people to this magical place. Thank you! 💙

If you’re near Mesta, it’s worth stopping by for coffee and loukoumades at Kanellos. After that, head to Kellari, the tiny bar in the plaza, for a glass of wine or a delicious cocktail.
