There’s a lot to like here. The staff are amazing, the place is clean, and the studios have what you need. The setting is quirky and lovely, just metres from the sea, with the wonderful Smugglers restaurant between the accommodation and the water. It serves food and drink from 10am until midnight. Kalipso has nice, reasonably priced snacks and drinks. In a couple of minutes on foot, you can reach several restaurants, bike and car hire, two bus stops, a supermarket, and the jetty for the ferry to Tolendos island. Go a bit further for scuba diving, or find somewhere different to eat each night. The reason for four stars is that the place is starting to look tired. The pool is small, though big enough for guests in the 20 Kalypso studios, but it’s also open to the public and shared with guests from other hotels, so it can feel oversubscribed. There are only 10 sun loungers, and they’re uncomfortable, with some cracked this year. Once they’re taken, everyone else has to use chairs or one of the 8 pads near the hot tub. There’s plenty of terrace space for more loungers, including quieter shaded spots as well as full sun by the pool. Some care, newer furniture, and more loungers would make this one of the best places to stay on the island.

The location is stunning, the pool is lovely, and the rooms are very clean. Staff were always helpful. The only downsides were a small shower and a bit of noise from the air con.

The rooms had comfortable beds, decent decor, and lovely balconies with string washing lines, though the bathrooms let them down. The toilet is very close to the shower, water spills onto the floor, and the curtain clings to you while you shower. It’s a pain unless you’re 5foot and super slim. The pool is lovely, but had dead flies and other debris in it. Some pool beds are uncomfortable if you’re over a certain size or weight, since you can feel the metal bars. Cushions for the sun loungers would help. On the plus side, staff are friendly, helpful, and pleasant, and they let us keep the room, which was a godsend with a late pickup and meant we didn’t lose the day. It’s in a great spot for restaurants, a few beaches, and the ferry to telendos. If you’re self-catering and want breakfast, go across the road to the hermes Hotel and ask for Kathy. She’s amazing, and breakfast is nice: €7.50 for a fresh continental meal with tea, coffee, and juices. I was treated to wonderful fried eggs each day, even though they weren’t on the menu, so they’re worth asking for.

The area looks lovely, but it needs some remedial work and better day-to-day maintenance. I used the pool, and the separate jacuzzi was extra cold under the sunshade. The outdoor toilets and shower weren’t very clean or looked after. I ordered coffees to my sun lounger, then staff left the cups there all day and didn’t clear the tables. The place needs regular cleaning of its services and better management of the waiting staff.

A relaxed place with really hospitable staff, and the balcony has magical views. The two downsides for me were the local children making annoying noise in the pool, and a terrible shower with a dirty, nasty curtain that you can’t avoid touching.
