It's run by a family, and the walk from the sea is about half a mile uphill. The rooms are clean and bright, with cooking facilities and a wet-room bathroom, and the family are friendly and happy to help. We went out of season, when things are quiet, though there are still supermarkets and a couple of tavernas open. It's a good base for hikes, with lovely sea and mountain views and nearby villages to explore. Rethymno, the third-largest town, is about a pleasant 40-minute drive away and well worth seeing.

The family who own and run the place are lovely, and Antonia is especially kind and generous. We felt the real Greek hospitality here. The rooms are spacious, with a garden out back where you can sit at tables or relax in hammocks. It's peaceful among the olive orchards, away from the noise of Plakias. The beach is still an easy walk away, or just a two-minute drive.

The breakfast was delicious, made with local products. The area is lovely, close to both nature and the sea. Some evenings people get together for Cretan treats, raki, and local music.
