The sea view from our basic but adequate, typically Cretan apartment was stunning. The village-like layout in this secluded cove was lovely, and the three pools included a main one with a built-in pirate ship that the kids liked. We were half board, which suited us well. The food was okay and regularly replenished, though I’m not sure all-inclusive would be worthwhile: the drink selection seemed limited, and I didn’t recognize any brands. The small onsite shop had basic things, enough for half board. A car is useful if you want to explore, and there’s plenty of parking. We walked the well-used cliff path to Damnoni Beach. It was a lovely route, doable even if you’re less fit, but the rocky, uneven ground calls for sturdier shoes than flip-flops. Some sunbeds were broken and needed only minor repairs, but I didn’t see anyone checking or maintaining them. The holiday was enjoyable in a beautiful spot, though the place needs some updating and upkeep. I think four stars is fair, and I’d definitely return.

The surroundings were pleasant, but cleanliness was a real letdown. We found ants in the bed and little worms in the bathroom, which wasn’t what we expected on holiday. The food was also disappointing, without much freshness or flavor, and we often wished we’d gone somewhere else to eat. The transfer arrangements felt careless too. If you’re travelling with TUI, think carefully before depending on their ride back to the airport. There are so many hotel stops that you could miss your flight if you rely on the schedule. It wasn’t a comfortable or well-organized stay. For a holiday in the area, I’d suggest staying in Plakias instead, where you’re in town with more to do and might have a smoother experience.

The location is the real strength here, along with the ambience the hotel must once have had. The garden and beach area now look old and neglected, and the beach bar wasn’t open during its advertised hours. Breakfast had a good selection, but the coffee was very bad. The breakfast room is spacious, though the indoor area has no AC and outside there were flies and wasps. The receptionist was nice, and there was karaoke for evening entertainment. The hotel needs serious renovation. Rooms are spacious with a small kitchen, TV, hairdryer and enough storage, but the hairdryer was very old. The bathroom has an odd extra shower built outside the bathtub, no proper ventilation, and the room AC was leaking.

For the price, this place is unreal. The snorkeling and scuba were some of the best, and the sunrises and sunsets were amazing. There are lovely short hikes, with a beautiful beach one way and a beach village the other, both seven minutes away. The staff were great, and everyone seemed happy in their work, including the pool maintenance crew and cleaners. That says a lot. I’d ignore reviews of three stars or less, since those people are whiny Karens, which must be unfortunate for their loved ones. Staff told me many of the minor issues mentioned in earlier reviews would be fixed over winter. I hope that makes the Karens happy by spring, though I doubt it, they’d probably still find something to complain about even if they won the lottery.

The natural setting around Kalypso was breathtaking during our three-night stay. Our room was clean and spacious, with a balcony and views of both the mountains and sea. Breakfast and dinner had a nice choice of local products, freshly prepared each day. Thank you, Kalypso.
