RG Village Crete

The only thing I’d change is the signposting. It’s a sprawling place with a lot on offer, and it could be clearer where to find things. I also think the food gets more criticism than it deserves. The dishes do repeat from day to day, but there’s still a decent choice and we always found it nice. The pools are chilly, though welcome after a day in the sun. We’ve stayed here twice and enjoyed both visits. It’s a quiet, relaxing spot away from the city, so it won’t suit someone looking for a party atmosphere. Being a little out of the way makes going elsewhere trickier, though certainly possible, and the peaceful setting is the upside. Both times our room was clean, and the housekeeping was thorough. You have to book the cleaning online when you want it.

The shuttle to the beach and Rethymno town made it easy to get out, even though the hotel sits a little way up in the hills. It’s about 15 minutes to town. We also loved the views and the calm end-of-season atmosphere. For a sunset meal, paraplous restaurant on the beach was stunning. We’ve just spent a week here at the end of October, with our two girls, aged 4 and 7, and had a lovely time. We’d upgraded to a pool room and got a spacious, two-floor villa-style room, which worked well with the kids. They had the children’s pool and playroom to themselves while we relaxed on the very comfy padded loungers nearby. The pool areas are large, and everything was clean. The food was tasty, though repetitive, with good salads, hot vegetarian dishes, gyros, plenty of meat, and choices for the children. The staff were friendly and attentive with the kids. There were only a couple of Greek dancing evenings, so entertainment was limited. I’m not sure how the canteen copes in August. I’d call it a four-star hotel rather than five. For us, it was an easy, relaxed stay, an 8/10.

The bar staff have been warm, attentive, and welcoming, which has been a bright spot. Reception has felt quite dismissive and unhelpful, though, and that makes a poor first impression. We’re staying at Ramondi Grand Resort and Spa in Crete now, and so far it hasn’t met our expectations. The food is repeatedly cold and much the same each day, with little choice. For a resort presented as high-end, the dining needs work. We’ve eaten out for all six nights so far and had much better meals each time. Room service has been the only decent option here, but it costs an extra €5, so it’s hard to justify. The hotel has potential, but the food quality and range, along with reception staff training, need attention. At present, the experience falls short of what we expected from a resort at this level.

The roof garden gave us some of our favorite evenings, with beautiful views, nice music, and a romantic feel. Around the pools, the cocktails were refreshing and well balanced, just right for warm August days. The food was fresh and delicious, with lots of choices and something new to enjoy each day. We visited RG Village as a couple in August and were enchanted from the start. It has a romantic, distinctive atmosphere, with greenery, quiet spots, and softly lit paths that made evening strolls feel special. The reception staff greeted us with big smiles and real warmth, and were always ready to help. Their thoughtful service made us feel at home right away. It’s a peaceful place for couples, surrounded by nature, with great food and drinks and kind staff. We’ll remember our stay for a long time and will definitely come back.
