We took a little detour from the road between Heraklion and Chania after getting hungry, and stumbled on Sisaion. The owner clearly cares about cooking, and it comes through in every dish. We tried dakos with farmed feta, dolmadakias, gemistas, stuffed zucchini flowers, and smoked sausages so good they could get addictive. The lamb in tomato sauce was cooked just right. There were cats around, as you often see in Greece, but the food was so good we barely had leftovers to share with them. For genuine Cretan cooking, it’s worth heading inland to a village tavern like this instead of relying on the touristy ports. We’ll definitely be back.
Our children had room to play while we ate, thanks to the little kids’ corner and its pile of toys. The restaurant is away from the noisy tourist areas, with lovely hill views and nice typical local food. A beautiful, family friendly spot.
We were given a complimentary dessert, and it was absolutely delicious. The portions were generous, the staff were really friendly, and we had a lovely lunch at this charming taverna. Highly recommended.
The service was brilliant, and there’s a play area that’s good for children. We had a beautiful salad, souvlaki, courgette cakes, and local sausage. It’s a sensational hidden spot, with mountain and valley views that were a great change from all the sea views we’d had that week.
