Athena Apartments

We were eight, and Joanna looked after all of us so well. It was my first visit to Crete, and this little place really delivered. Athena is family-run, the location is perfect, and it’s wonderfully quiet. The food was good and the sunbeds comfy. Rooms were clean, though I’d have liked the beds and pillows a bit softer. The pool was amazing and spotless, and our apartment was very clean too. We had a fabulous week at The Athena. It’s a welcoming family-run place where you feel looked after at any hour. Breakfast is freshly cooked and delicious, and the full breakfast at 7€ is a great deal, much cheaper than in Stalis Town, about a seven-minute walk away. We loved our stay and will be back xxxx

Joanna, who runs the apartments, was friendly and helpful. It’s a peaceful spot with a nice pool, sunbeds, and tables and chairs, about five minutes on foot from the beach, bars, and restaurants. Our room was very clean, nicely decorated, and had good furniture, a small kitchenette, a pleasant bathroom, and a balcony. It could have been a little larger, but two of us had enough space.

The late checkout for €25 was handy, and the price was reasonable for four adults sharing a room. Beyond that, we had a rough week. The staff could be frosty, and at times downright rude. There was just one air conditioning unit for a large room, so we left bedroom doors open at night to stay cool. It switched off during the day when the key was taken out, and we ended up leaving our room unlocked all week. Around the pool, sunbed competition was constant. One red towel sat on the same lounger all day and night for the entire week, so expect shade if you want to use the pool. The beds were rock hard and the pillows among the worst I’ve slept on. After cleaning, no fresh toilet rolls were left. When one of us asked, a disgruntled staff member reluctantly handed over one roll and told us to buy more at the supermarket.
