The rooftop views were amazing, looking out over a 15th-century ruin, and the decor felt charming and just right. The hostel had a distinct Antigua character and unbeatable prices. I've stayed in hostels across the US, Canada, Southeast Asia, Australia, the UK, Scotland, and Ireland, and this may be the cleanest, friendliest, most beautiful one I've visited. It felt more like a three-star-plus hotel. I highly recommend it for everyday travelers.

When I arrived in Antigua for my reservation, there was no door at number 11 on Hermano Pedro Street, despite the photo shown here. Around the corner on Hermano Pedro Street there was a gate, so I knocked there and on the windows, but nobody came out. Someone spoke through a window and said it wasn't the right place and they didn't know Casa Mercedes. I also asked at the Good Hotel and Saul Restaurant across the street. The restaurant manager tried the intercom, but they said it wasn't this hotel. Then my travel agency contacted the operator, who said the rooms had been overbooked, which was why I hadn't been seen. I had paid in advance and had the address and phone number, yet there seemed to be no hotel there. In a strange country where I knew nobody, it was terrifying and felt like being in the Twilight Zone. Horrible!

It was a lovely, tidy, very clean place to stay. The kitchen has everything equipped, and there was comfortable room for more than ten people. We had an excellent stay.
