Funk Yeah Hostel

We paid cash at the front desk and accidentally left our wallet there. We later discovered that the receptionist, Reyna Izabel Aguilar Palacios, had taken it. The security footage clearly showed her taking 400 quetzals from the wallet, but management refused to give the money back. Since we were leaving that evening and short on time, we couldn't involve the police. Our stay at Funk Yeah Hostel was extremely disappointing. We'll never stay there again and strongly advise others to avoid it.

The rest of the place was average, with dirty bathrooms and a bad atmosphere. But the bedbugs were the worst stay I've ever had in any kind of accommodation. Don't stay here. All hostels get bedbugs sometimes, but this was an infestation of fully grown adults. When I found them and told staff, they first insisted on just changing the sheets. Eventually they put us on plastic-covered mattresses on the office floor. They were very unhelpful about cleaning our clothes and bags, and made it seem like we were somehow to blame. I wish I'd properly counted and recorded how many there were. I've travelled for two years and never seen them before. Wish me luck as I tumble-dry all our expensive gear to death. I'd rather sleep on a park bench.

I paid £5 a night through Hotelsdotcom, and at that price this gets five stars from me. Booking directly at the property costs $6.50. The place was extremely clean, they seem to spend all day at it, maybe a little too much haha, and the WiFi was genuinely excellent. Showers and toilets are plentiful and clean, with good water pressure, though the water is cold. There's a small cafe attached and bikes for rent. Staff were all nice, but only the owners spoke English, and they were very kind. The owners don't seem to have figured out online marketing yet. There are hardly any reviews, which seems odd given the location and the popular tour agency joined to the place. I was skeptical from the few reviews about whether it even existed, especially at such a competitive price. Rooms only lock from the inside and there are no lockers, so you'll probably feel better keeping valuables with you. For the price, the value is 110%.

The WiFi is good, and the place is okay for one night, but it feels too expensive for a hostal without a kitchen or lockers. None of the rooms, even the private ones, can be locked, so you have to keep valuables with you. It also doesn't feel safe knowing anyone can wander around. When I asked for toilet paper, they said they don't provide rolls because people from outside use the toilets. Isn't it the reception lady's job to stop them? Only one shower is hot, so ask ahead if that matters to you. Groups gather noisily at 7 every morning for breakfast before heading to the Volcano. Staff don't seem to care.
