Hostel Paraiso Verde Coban

If you’re after a quiet stay in a forest full of wildlife, birds, and butterflies, I’d recommend giving this place a try. The house is a beautiful log and stone home, clearly built with love, and it fits its surroundings perfectly. Otto and Victor were so friendly and helpful. They also have an excellent cook who comes in, and meals cost just 8quetzels per person for generous food. The orquedia reserve is a short walk away and well worth visiting for its many orchid varieties. They lend you a magnifying glass to see the details on the tiny flowers, which you’d otherwise walk right past. We stayed at the end of October, 2022, and loved how peaceful it was.

The family who own this hotel were so kind. They even offered us a delicious homemade dinner instead of us going out to a restaurant. The jungle setting is beautiful, and the rooms are clean, with hot water and no mosquitos in our room. There are extra blankets for the cold nights. It’s very affordable, and I’d love to come back for a longer stay.

It’s a lovely little cabin in the jungle, where you can see and hear all kinds of birds. The owner was welcoming and looked after us. He took us into the nearby city to do laundry and pick up some other things, and showed us around the jungle on his property, pointing out different plants and birds. I recommend it if you enjoy nature.

Otto built this house with his dad, and he’s a really nice, laid-back guy who makes sure you have a good stay. It’s a peaceful, eco-friendly spot for anyone who likes simple living. There’s no WiFi and electricity is limited, but with all the nature and good vibes around, I didn’t feel I needed them. Getting there by bus can be a bit tricky, though buses run frequently about a five-minute walk away. Google Maps and your navigation can help, or you can call Otto and he’ll help you out. One small thing, which is more the neighbours’ fault than Otto’s: just before the hotel, two big k9 dogs greet you in a way that isn’t very friendly. They won’t bite, but it can be a little scary if you’re nervous around dogs. Otto can come to the rescue if needed. I’d really recommend the place if you like keeping things simple.
