A hidden gem run by a brother and sister from the nearby indigenous community. They were welcoming, friendly, and helpful, and the food they made was delicious. The peaceful, secluded hotel has beautiful lagoon views from your hammock. We also loved the kayak tour. They know the way to laguna escondida, a quiet place to sit and listen for birds singing. Call ahead at +502 4804-7511 so they can pick you up from Rio Dulce or Livingston.

You need to arrange this stay ahead of time. The contact details on the website don't work, but Filomena (502-48047511) or her brother Alvaro (502-32639674) can be reached by WhatsApp message in Spanish. They can also arrange a reasonably priced lancha pickup from Rio Dulce or Livingston. We spent a night here in February 2024 and had a beautiful, unforgettable time with a very friendly family from the local indigenous community. Q'ana Itz'am is a special chance to experience everyday life in a remote, unspoiled area. The basic wooden huts are peaceful and clean, with private bathrooms and showers, and are reasonably priced. It's a short walk through the jungle to a deck with hammocks overlooking the river. Their restaurant serves fresh local food and has reliable WIFI. Kayaks are available to rent, and Álvaro can give a great guided tour if you want one. Highly recommended.

The food was great, and the accommodation was great too.

We could only stay one day in the Chocón Machaca Biotope, but spending it at Q'ana Itz'am with Filomena and Álvaro made for a unique experience. The accommodation is simple, with a private bathroom, set in the jungle beside the lake. We enjoyed the local food they cooked, and explored the nearby nature and indigenous community by boat and kayak. Or you can just lie in a hammock and watch life on the lake. You have to come by boat from Río Dulce or Livingstone, and they can arrange it for you. Book ahead. Filomena can be reached by phone or WhatsApp at +502-48047511, and Álvaro at +502-32639674. WiFi is available, and the prices are very reasonable.

A friendly welcome, and a chance to meet the local community out in the forest. Don't just turn up without warning.
