The receptionist was very kind and professional, and gave me useful information about buses and the MTR. In my experience, the woman at the front desk spoke English better than Chinese. Some reviews seemed to focus more on the staff than on the hotel itself. Guests can be undisciplined and arrogant, and some are drunk. Rooms sometimes smell of smoke, but I don't think that's the staff's fault. I think it's caused by rude people ignoring the rules. I find objective reviews more useful than personal ones. Objectively, this isn't a first-class hotel, but it's not as bad as I've read. The rooms are small, though that's Hong Kong. My ratings: rooms 3, service 3, location 5, and 5 for the woman at reception.

The bed is comfortable, the washroom is clean, and the ground floor foyer is clean too, with an area for eating or working. For a budget hotel, you need realistic expectations. I have two small suggestions: add more wall hooks for bags and clothes, and provide more hangers. There were so few that I spent $15 buying extras. That's minor, though, and I'm enjoying my stay.

The best thing I saw on checkout day was them bringing in a shiny new "metacity MK" mirror display for the lobby. Meanwhile, there are so many things wrong with the rooms. That cheap, tacky furniture feels like the wrong thing to spend money on when the lobby and rooms are so dirty and old. My partner and I arrived late after a flight and planned to sleep in the first morning. At 9AM sharp, workers started replacing the air conditioning in the room RIGHT NEXT DOOR. Drilling, smashing, and shouting in Canto woke us despite our exhaustion. The receptionist said the whole hotel was construction free except that ONE ROOM RIGHT BESIDE OURS. When I said we had a long night and wanted to sleep, he stared at me judgmentally and replied, “At this hour…?” It was literally 9 in the morning, not 4PM. After some arguing, he finally moved us, but we had to repack everything and go upstairs to an even smaller room. That wasn't the only problem. Our first impression was filth in every corner, with flies and other insects everywhere. The furniture, walls, air conditioning, shower cubicle, and floor all looked extremely old. The sheets and towels had yellow, orange, and brown stains, plus large holes. The wifi barely worked, maybe 10% of the time. Even with full phone signal, speeds were under 1mb/s and nothing was usable, so good luck texting family. The sink tap was broken loose, and I had to hold it down with one hand while turning on the water. Shower and tap temperatures were haywire and couldn't be adjusted properly, so we'd wait over 5 minutes for water to stop nearly boiling us alive. The shower head had no proper holder. There was no soap in the dispenser, and the deadbolt was broken off from the door frame. This was the worst “hotel” I've ever had the disprivilege of booking, if it even counts as a hotel. I ignored the bad reviews, thinking people were probably exaggerating like they do about most hotels. I'm a fuss-free traveler, and I was still taken aback by how awful this place was. We came to Hong Kong late on the first night, and the plan was to rest after the flight, but instead we got woken up by construction. I spent almost 30 minutes writing this review so others can learn from my mistake. Don't even give it a chance. Spend a little extra for somewhere marginally better. That small investment will pay dividends.

Conveniently located in Mongkok, near Langham Place and public transport, Metacity MK is somewhere I've stayed five times since 2023. But comfort has kept falling short, even compared with ordinary 3-star hotels in Taipei. I'm reconsidering future stays and may look at 4-star alternatives on my next Hong Kong trip. On my latest visit in early July 2025, I was given a Level 1 room with an old, noisy air conditioner controlled by a knob, with no remote. I also saw a centipede scurry into a hole near the bottom of the door frame. One night around 2-3 a.m., loud Cantonese swearing and three door slams woke me. It was probably a domestic dispute between a guest and their visitors in a nearby room.

The location is strategic and the stay was comfortable. Amy was especially polite and helpful throughout my visit, and Louis also deserves a small thank you for his assistance. I'll definitely come back on my next trip to Hong Kong.
