The hotel had a discreet Middle European charm, and the price was affordable. From the breakfast terrace there was a fantastic view of the Franciscan Monastery opposite, while our first-floor loggia looked out over the whole bay of Hvar. I also liked the old-fashioned bathroom and its high built-in bath, which took some effort to climb into. There was no AC, but we think air conditioning is unhealthy, and the thick walls kept the room naturally cool. Breakfast was okay, though it could have been better. The downside was hordes of drunk lowly Brits, yelling around 4 a.m. as they came onto the city and hotel beach to jump around and show off.

The location was great, and we could have lived with the shabby furniture and lack of outlets, but I can’t get past the dirty bathroom, broken windows, and the way they put us in a room that seemed to be a disgrace. We had a brown ring of water around the toilet where it met the tiles, and the electricity in the hotel shut off twice during our stay. It felt like they were trying to scam guests. Don’t stay here. The first room had a broken window facing directly onto a wall, so there was no natural light. There was no AC, just a tiny, dirty fan. The sockets were hanging out of the wall, ivy grew through the bathroom window, the bath drained poorly, and there was no fitting to hold the shower head. It wasn’t at all like the advertised room. After our first night we complained. They moved us without even looking at the room. The second one was much better because light came in from a balcony, but it still had no AC and only two sockets in the whole room. The bathroom there was filthy too. I could tell they knew how bad the first room was and were putting people in it, hoping they wouldn’t complain.

The view and location are the only things going for it. The rooms were poor, with no power sockets, uncomfortable beds, no AC, flimsy doors, and a dirty bathroom. Breakfast gets an impressive 5/10. It’s the second worst place I’ve stayed, after somewhere that cost me £2 a night. By that measure, this was worth a reasonable £6. If all you need is a place to sleep off a drink, it’s okay. For anything else, look elsewhere.

Hvar itself was absolutely awesome, and the location and views were fantastic. The hotel, though, was a different story. Our room was dirty, with bits on the floor, and the bathroom felt dated, with cracked tiles and a broken shower head. There was no AC, just a small desk fan plugged into the only spare socket. Security was poor too. The room doors were lightweight and the locks didn't fit properly, while the communal doors stayed open all day and night. I couldn't leave valuables in the room. If the owners want people to come back, the place needs a full interior renovation. Still, I didn't let the hotel spoil my visit.

We booked two nights, but the annex was so disgusting that we refused to stay the second night. The carpets were stained, the walls were peeling and moldy, there was dust everywhere, and the whole place smelled like mold and wet dog. At the free breakfast, which costs 100 kuna for non-guests, I found half a roach sliced up with the fruit. There are much better hotels and hostels in the same price range. Don't waste your vacation time or money here.
