I came to Makarska alone hoping for a quiet, relaxing holiday, but my stay became frightening and deeply uncomfortable. One day after I returned from the beach, I found a shower enclosure shattered across the floor. From what I understand, glass can break because of stress in the material, and I was relieved I hadn't been inside when it happened because I could have been badly hurt. When I reported it, the hotel blamed me and said I had to pay for the damage or be thrown out, despite having paid for another week. The manager shouted at me and accused me of being drunk and disturbing other guests. He also called me an alcoholic, even though I hadn't been drunk in Croatia and had only had a glass of wine with dinner. He claimed I had terrorized the cleaning staff, although I had never even spoken to them. He said he'd put me out on the street if I did one more small thing. After that, I felt afraid to stay there. When I asked to speak with Miro about it, they wouldn't give me his email or last name. As a 35-year-old woman travelling alone, the situation felt especially unsettling. The hotel itself was in poor shape: wires hanging out in the bathroom held with duct tape, damaged walls, old showers, broken mirrors, and a broken balcony door. The cleaning was also inadequate. They didn't clean the balcony, shower, or kitchen counter. There is no elevator for floors three and four, so luggage has to be carried up and down. I wouldn't feel safe staying somewhere with an owner I experienced as unstable and hostile.
