The faded colors make the Veli Jože mural look neglected now, and I think it should be renovated. It no longer has the impact it ought to, given how well known a symbol it is for Motovun and Istria. Veli Jože means "Great Jože". He's the legendary giant in Vladimir Nazor's story, a symbol of strength and also of an ordinary, good man from the people. In the story, he's exploited and later fights for his freedom. His story stands as a metaphor for Istria and its people, their struggles, subordination, and desire for freedom. That's why it's a shame the mural isn't better cared for. Restoring it would bring out its meaning and give it the respect it deserves.

The mural Veli Jože brings to mind Vladimir Nazor's best-known work, along with the folk stories, legends, and memories of people about a race of giants that supposedly once lived. The painting is fairly average, with little detail, especially in the faces. Even so, it works nicely on the house facade and catches the eye of people visiting Motovun. If it gets someone to pick up the famous story, then it's done its job. 😃
