We ended up staying for 10 days instead of the two nights we had planned on our way to the coast. The beaches near Crikvenica and Rijeka are only a little over half an hour away, and it was a relief to come back to cooler Gorski Kotar after the sea heat. Our children have allergies and asthma and can't tolerate air conditioning. At 800-900 m, Gorski Kotar stays pleasant even on the hottest days, and we all slept well. We also visited Frankopan castle Stara Sušica, just a few minutes away, and the nicely arranged information center about large carnivores. There's plenty for the whole family. The Poljančić apartment in Ravna Gora made a great base. It sits in the town center, so shops, the bakery and nearby bars are an easy walk, and the area offers loads of activities like trekking, hiking, mountain biking, mushroom picking and fishing. There are also remarkable natural sights a short drive away, including Samarske and Bijele stijene, Lokvarsko Fužinsko and Sabljaci lakes, and the Kamačnik gorge, Kolpa, Dobra and Mrežnica rivers. We rode bikes through fields and forest paths to Zeleni vir waterfall and Vražji prolaz gorge. The hosts shared useful tips and offered us a ride back if we needed one. We grilled at the outdoor fireplace under the canopy behind the house, which the children loved. The hosts were friendly and helpful, and we felt at home. Everything was spotless and ready when we arrived. The apartment has what a family needs for a comfortable longer stay, and we were pleasantly surprised to find two extra rooms. That's real added value and a great price for what you get. We plan to spend some of our winter holiday here, with toboggan runs and cross-country trails nearby, and return next summer to explore more of Gorski Kotar. These places deserve more attention.
