Heritage Palace Varos - MAG Quaint & Elegant Boutique Hotels

This was a rough start to our Croatia holiday. We could hear everything from the rooms above and below us, and the room itself was dark, like a prison cell. At night it swung between stuffy and very hot or freezing, since the AC didn’t seem to work properly. We’d been told we could have twin beds, but instead got a cramped double and a small seat made up as a bed that didn’t work. I don’t like leaving bad reviews, but I really struggled to stay here. Never again.

The good part was the location. A friendly staff member checked us in, and they let us keep our bags after checkout. But please check which room you’re booking. We had room 006, across the road from reception, for one night, and it was simply horrendous. The damp smell hit us as soon as we arrived and was so bad it made you heave. We checked in late, so accepted it and stayed out as long as possible to spend less time in the room. The smell was still there when we returned. The toilet seat cover had come off, there was no WiFi because of the distance from reception and the old brick building, and our phones suffered too. The TV only had sound, no working picture.

The staff member working during my stay was kind and friendly. I spent three nights here and really liked the room. It was spacious, as was the bathroom, and the mix of stone, wood, and fabric felt elegant, romantic, and distinctive. The hotel is in the old town, on a very quiet block, in a heritage building. I found it unique and elegant, though there’s no lift for luggage. There were a few frustrations. The digital key didn’t work, so I had to carry a regular key. Sometimes nobody was at reception during the day. The room lamp hung too low to read comfortably in bed, the fridge was tiny, and I could hear noise from the next room, including some embarrassing sounds. Even so, I enjoyed my stay.

The room was large and clean, though the furniture was quite worn and a bit dated. It was somewhat noisy, but the AC worked really well. The staff were welcoming and nice, and the hotel is close to the city centre with lots of great restaurants nearby.
