I spent one day in Split before heading home the next day. Matea answered my questions promptly and communicated really well. The room was clean and modern, and the location was just right: follow the path down and you reach the center, with the old Romanesque ruins. The bus station with the airport shuttle isn’t too far either. I’d definitely recommend it for solo travel.

The photos gave the wrong impression. The apartment is under 10 m2 and so tiny that two people can’t fit comfortably. From outside, the house looks haunted. Really disappointing, and poor value for money.

The room itself was the one good part: spacious, clean, and nice. We were on the ground floor, so there was no elevator and we didn’t need to haul luggage up stairs, though there were steps at the entrance. Getting there with large suitcases was hard. The hotel entrance was difficult to find, and we had to pull our bags up the entry stairs. Check-in was much worse. There was no reception or staff around, and it took nearly 50 minutes, when it should have taken five. We hadn’t seen any notice telling us to use WhatsApp, so I had to install an unfamiliar app on roaming data and find the hotel’s number to call or message for directions. In Korea and other parts of Northeast Asia, people use their own messaging apps, not WhatsApp. Changing SIM cards can also make it impossible to create a WhatsApp account, even though travelers often switch SIMs for data abroad. The key instructions came in a few lines of text with no photos. We spent another ten minutes looking for the key box, which turned out to be a black box beside the locked door. We’d thought it was a doorbell for reception. A photo or PDF of the check-in instructions would have helped. This was the most unfriendly check-in service I’ve experienced. At minimum, they should tell guests in advance to download WhatsApp and get in touch. Because check-in took so long, we left the next day without much chance to explore Split. The WhatsApp check-in process in Croatia was confusing and frustrating for me. If you’re visiting from Northeast Asia, I recommend installing the app beforehand, saving each hotel’s number, and contacting them a few hours before arrival.
