This was a nightmare, and my family nearly ended up in hospital. I picked the place on Booking.com because it had an 8.1 rating, the photos looked lovely, and the kitchenette seemed like a way to avoid Split’s expensive restaurant meals, which averaged €120 for one course and water for four people. The house itself was old, in terrible shape, and very dirty. I also found Split unpleasantly unclean, with frequent bad and sewage smells in the streets. Don’t count on promises to clean or repair things. To be safer, I’d look for at least a 4 star place or stay outside the historic center. After I raised the issue with Booking.com customer service, the owner, apparently worried about a lower rating, offered to move me to another property and refund the two nights I’d already spent there. But then he left me out on the street and refused the refund that customer service had officially agreed to only a few hours earlier. I felt cheated. The reviews above 2 stars seem to me to come from people the owner knows. I should have read the negative reviews on Booking more carefully. I’d have realized the 8.1 rating was inflated.
