Hotel Villa Valpovo

The staff were mostly great, but the owner's behavior made the stay really unpleasant. She gossiped about my guests to other guests, with implications that were concerning, and tried to verbally abuse my 17-year-old visitor when she was alone outside at night. If she had a problem, she should have spoken to me or my mother, since we were the guests, instead of going after my girlfriend. I also felt she was overcharging my mother: when the owner served drinks at the cafe, she charged 20 cents more than her staff usually did. The breakfast was poor for the price. Food often sat out for hours with nothing fresh brought in, including cheese with flies around it and soggy sausages. The empty restaurant says a lot. The owner's conduct left us feeling unwelcome and disgusted. Her four stars seem like a scam to me, and she seems too tight with money and money hungry to deserve even one star. The string of one-star reviews backs up my impression. This might work for a night or two, but stay longer and you may see the owner's nasty, bullying side for yourself.

Breakfast had loads of choices, and the service was great, especially in the mornings. We spent three nights there with the family over New Year weekend, and everything went well. It's a nice family-run place, and I'd book again if I'm in the area. The room keys could use an update, though I believe they'll sort that out soon.

The rooms are small and cozy, but clean and kept in good shape. For this area, it's the best hotel and covers the basics, with friendly, helpful staff who take care of what you need. Rooms on the left look out over a little stream, and a family of swans brightened things up during my stay. For laptop work, the Wi-Fi is strongest in the lobby. There's a small radio in each room that picks up most local music and a few English stations too. A good place to stay.

We only stayed a short time, but it was a lovely visit. The service felt very professional and the staff were kind. We checked in really late, and they were still waiting to welcome us at 2 a.m.
