The host’s wife was very kind and nice, and the room was clean. We got toilet paper every third day along with clean sheets and towels, which was a nice touch. But there’s no guarantee your room will have a balcony or a great view, and neither is guaranteed. Parking was the main reason we booked. I don’t think guests should have to dig through extra booking clauses when there’s a parking checkbox. When we arrived, the owner said parking was mentioned on the website but didn’t guarantee a spot, since it depended on arrival order. I told him it was the only reason we’d booked, and somehow we worked it out and he let me park there. So don’t count on getting a spot. Some spaces may not fit a large car. The kitchen is only half what you might expect. It’s in a separate building, has limited tableware, and is almost useless for cooking. One evening we wanted to make instant soup, but the owner had closed it without telling anyone, so we went to bed hungry. He said someone had stolen his red onions, though he knew it wasn’t us. There’s almost no privacy when you sit down there. The place is very far from everything. Restaurants are around, but finding a shop is hard, and bus tickets are expensive, about €2.5 each. There is Wi-Fi, but cybersecurity doesn’t seem to be their strong suit. Would I recommend it? No. There was too much hassle when we arrived, and the owner didn’t seem to care that we’d just driven 12 hours. The parking, kitchen, and privacy problems were too much. Maybe as a last resort, but I’d spend more to stay somewhere else.

The bathroom could use improvement: the shower head often came loose, and the floor kept getting quite wet. Parking was sometimes tight, and you have to reverse out and down the hill. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it. Getting onto the main road could be annoying too, since cars often go fast and you have to wait for a good gap. We booked mainly for the location, about a 10-15 minute drive from Dubrovnik. We parked at Gruz port parking for €3/hour, then took bus 1a or 1b to the old town for €2-3 one way, which dropped us by Pile gate and the Game of Thrones locations. There are also nice beaches and restaurants nearby. We went to Potok beach, through a deserted camping area, and Veliki Zal beach. Both are pebble beaches to the left of Zaton, with incredibly clear water. Potok is smaller, while the other one is a bit bigger and has a bar. We usually went to a restaurant afterwards, and Konoba Kasar was the best, with a lovely dinner by the water. The hosts were so kind when we arrived. They offered us a beer and a snack, and we settled in after a nice chat. Our clean room had a lovely view across the water toward the other side of Zaton, and a big fridge kept all the groceries we’d brought nice and cool. It’s a great place if you want to visit Dubrovnik but stay somewhere quieter. The host would always start a conversation when we got back, and if we were lucky, he’d let us try some of his home-cooked food and brewed drinks. :)

We enjoyed staying with the host family so much last year that we’re coming back again this year. The rooms were spotless, and sharing evenings chatting with the funny, well-travelled, wise man and his wonderful wife made the stay memorable. He suggested lots of great places to visit. It was a really pleasant experience.

The apartment itself was okay, but there was no soap in the bathroom, hair dryer, or kitchen paper. The man running the place was pleasant while everything went his way, then got really rude when I asked for more. I asked if the Wi-Fi could reach the apartment and suggested moving the router closer to his window. He replied, "I'm getting stressed now. You don't want to make me nervous.." His attitude was awful. He acted like hosting us was a favor and bullied me. I wouldn't recommend staying here. Keep your distance from him.

The old fridge was so loud it made sleeping at night impossible, and parking was a problem too. The host was aggressive, vulgar, and quick to lose his temper over ordinary questions. We asked about toilet paper and whether we could use the grill, and he exploded. When we asked him to calm down, he became even more aggressive and raised his hand toward my girlfriend and me. He also followed us around, correcting what we were doing, so there was no privacy. We're easygoing guests, but this was a nightmare. I would never go back. Stay away if you want a nice holiday.
