BALATONAIR - Erdei Vendégház

We'd visited three times this year and had booked months ahead. A few weeks before our arrival, they even called to check that we were still coming. But when we got there, we were told the place was full and sent to a neighboring house instead. It was the same house we'd checked out last year and thought was in terrible shape, and unfortunately it hadn't improved. The room was dirty, shabby and run down, and the bed was so uncomfortable we only managed a few hours' sleep. At least we were there for just one night. We'd also booked breakfast, then found out it wasn't available at any of their houses. When the employees called the boss, who was spending the middle of the high season in Austria, he had no idea who we were or why we were there. The place itself had been good on earlier visits, but this stay was a mess.

The room in the neighboring building, on the right side of the yellow building as seen from the main road, was a shock after our earlier stays. In 2015 and 2016 we'd had a clean, high-quality room and excellent service, and we came back this year almost as regulars. This time, though, we were told on arrival there was no room in the place we'd booked. The double bed mattress sagged in the middle, the terrace door wouldn't shut, and there was what felt like a whole animal world in the toilet bowl. We could hear our roommates in the corridor, which was really disturbing at 4 am. I don't mean road noise. Thankfully, we only had to put up with it for one night. A huge disappointment.

We were made to feel very welcome for our weekend here, and everything was tidy and clean. The room was simply furnished but comfortable. My husband and I would stay again next time we're in Balatonfüred.

We woke to a jackhammer at 8 am. The host had left out one small detail before we booked, and that was not a pleasant surprise.
