I still love Budapest, but this was the worst hostel I’ve ever stayed in. My first impression inside the room was of a neglected, almost abandoned building, not somewhere being cleaned for guests. Dust and someone’s hair had clumped together and rolled across the floor. The closet was so dirty I couldn’t touch it, and its inner wood was badly peeled, making it unusable. The bedding was stained, while the yellowed pillows and blankets were covered in hair. One of the mattresses was badly broken, so my sister couldn’t sleep properly. I couldn’t believe I’d paid to sleep on it. The room listing also said there was air conditioning, but there wasn’t, and they need to correct that description as soon as possible. Opening the window brought in lots of bugs that crawled over my belongings and hovered around my face. The next night I kept it shut and it became unbearably hot, like a sauna. I wouldn’t recommend staying here at any time of year, especially in summer. No matter how cheap a hostel is, it still needs to be clean. The manager must have seen plenty of reviews, so I don’t understand why the place hasn’t improved.

I stayed during the Ziget festival, when prices were high. It wasn’t really worth the cost, though it’s a reasonable fallback if nothing else is available. Nearby you can walk to the metro, buses, Arena Mall, a supermarket, restaurants, cafes, and an ATM. The building has an old European look and felt a bit scary, like it might have been in a horror movie. The rooms and beds were comfortable, and the showers were good. The toilets and showers for women and men are quite far apart, though, and the facilities were sometimes clean and sometimes dirty and smelly, with lots of insects. The staff were nice and always ready to help or explain things.

The beds and bathrooms were dirty, and the sheets were nasty because they didn’t even fit the beds. The reception staff didn’t speak much English. The place gave me the feeling of a psychiatric hospital and cost too much for what it was. It wasn’t far from the center, but the neighborhood felt a bit shady. There were no shades to block the morning light, and construction work was happening across the street, so mornings were noisy and it was hard to sleep.

The toilets were filthy, the shower room wouldn’t close, and there was no privacy, with glass doors on the rooms. People ignored curfew, so the fluorescent lights stayed on all night where you could see them, and you could hear guests coming back from the city or airport at 3am. It felt like a crumbling high school dorm, not a hostel. Never again. As a woman travelling alone, I found it hard to feel safe and wouldn’t recommend it. For context, I’m from Eastern Europe and usually choose budget places when I travel, but this was too much. F.u mogyorgi, you ruined my holiday!

The price may be tempting, but I’d still say don’t go. This is the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in, and I strongly don’t recommend it. It’s a really, really disgusting place.
