Where to stay in Budapest
Compare central Pest, the Jewish Quarter, the Opera streets, Buda Castle, City Park and Margaret Island by atmosphere, sightseeing and actual transport connections.

Plan your visit
Budapest rewards choosing a side of the river and a neighbourhood before choosing a hotel. Central Pest connects the biggest concentration of restaurants and metro interchanges; the Castle District puts historic Buda outside your door but above the river; Margaret Island trades street life for gardens and a different daily journey. These six bases distinguish the parts of Pest that can otherwise blur together on a booking map. Each pin identifies a real landmark within the described area. It is not a neighbourhood boundary, and a hotel at the far end of a district may have a quite different walk to transport.
Choose your base
Choose Belvaros-Lipotvaros for the Danube and a broad first-visit base, inner Erzsebetvaros for Jewish heritage and late dining, or Terezvaros around the Opera for theatres and the M1 metro. The Castle District suits a Buda-focused stay with hills; the City Park edge favours museums, baths and outdoor family time. Margaret Island works best when gardens and a hotel retreat matter more than walking home from central Pest.
Belvaros-Lipotvaros: the Danube and a central first visit

District V combines the parliamentary streets of Lipotvaros with the older downtown area of Belvaros. Around Kossuth Square, the Parliament and Danube embankment shape the day; farther south, St. Stephen's Basilica, Zrinyi Street and the restaurants around Sas Street provide a different evening focus. A hotel near the river makes repeated walks along the Pest bank easy, while one near Deak Ferenc Square puts several routes within reach. These are different positions within one central district, not interchangeable addresses.
BKK's M2 serves Kossuth Lajos Square, M3 serves Arany Janos Street, and Deak brings together M1, M2 and M3. The 100E airport bus terminates at Deak, so a Parliament-area hotel still needs an onward walk or connection. The trade-off is a visitor-heavy centre with broad roads and pockets of offices rather than uniformly intimate residential streets. Choose the Jewish Quarter for bars immediately outside the door, or the Castle District if historic Buda is the main reason for the trip.
Plan it well: The map pin marks Hungarian Parliament Building, not the neighbourhood boundary.

The inner part of District VII is a compact stay area with more depth than its ruin-bar reputation suggests. Dohany Street Synagogue stands at its southern edge; the Rumbach and Kazinczy street synagogues sit among courtyards, small shops and restaurants. Kiraly Street and the Gozsdu courtyards concentrate evening activity. Staying here suits a trip that combines Jewish history with eating out and returning on foot after a performance or a drink, rather than travelling back to a distant hotel.
Astoria on BKK's M2 is useful near Dohany Street, while Deak Ferenc Square offers M1, M2 and M3 at the western edge. The 100E airport bus reaches Deak; check the final route to a hotel farther into the quarter instead of assuming a door-to-door airport connection. Nightlife is also the clearest downside: a courtyard or a street near bars can remain lively when you want to sleep. Ask about the room's orientation and choose Lipotvaros or the City Park edge if late-night activity is unwelcome.
Plan it well: The map pin marks Dohány Street Synagogue, not the neighbourhood boundary.
Budapest tourism: Jewish BudapestTerezvaros around Opera and Oktogon: theatres and cafe streets

The inner stretch of Andrassy Avenue gives Terezvaros a grander street scene than the neighbouring Jewish Quarter. The Hungarian State Opera anchors one end of this useful hotel area; Nagymezo Street adds theatres, and Liszt Ferenc Square gathers cafes and restaurant terraces near Oktogon. Side streets can make a more practical base than an avenue-facing room if you want to return from dinner without staying directly over the busiest road. This is a strong choice for a culture-led visit that still needs central Pest within reach.
BKK's M1 stops at Opera and Oktogon, and trams 4 and 6 cross the avenue at Oktogon. From the 100E airport bus at Deak, M1 provides an onward connection, subject to the hotel's final walking route. Andrassy continues a considerable distance towards City Park, so an address described as being on the avenue is not automatically close to the Opera. Traffic and a less riverside setting are the compromises. Choose District V for Danube walks, or the park end of the avenue for baths and family attractions.
Plan it well: The map pin marks Hungarian State Opera House, not the neighbourhood boundary.
Budapest tourism: Andrassy AvenueCastle District: historic Buda above the river

The Castle District is a distinct hilltop base, not simply a quieter version of central Pest. Around Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion, stone streets and the Toth Arpad promenade make the setting itself part of the stay. The Royal Palace area adds major museum destinations farther along the hill. Cafes and restaurants serve both residents and daytime visitors, but the range and street energy are different from the dense eating and drinking streets across the Danube. Choose it when returning to historic Buda is a pleasure in its own right.
BKK's castle buses connect the hill with Deak Ferenc Square and Szell Kalman Square; the official map distinguishes routes 16, 16A and 216 rather than a single universal castle service. An airport arrival on 100E at Deak therefore needs another leg, or a road transfer arranged for the actual hotel address. Hills, steps and sightseeing crowds around the main monuments are the practical compromises. For repeated evenings in Pest, or easy interchange without a climb, the Opera streets or District V are more convenient bases.
Plan it well: The map pin marks Fisherman's Bastion, not the neighbourhood boundary.
Budapest tourism: the Buda Castle District and its surroundingsCity Park edge: baths, museums and family days

Hotels around Heroes' Square and the outer end of Andrassy Avenue suit a trip built around City Park rather than the riverfront. The Museum of Fine Arts frames the square, while the park brings together Vajdahunyad Castle, the zoo, Szechenyi Baths and newer cultural venues including the House of Music. Gundel and the Varosliget Cafe provide named dining options around this attraction cluster. The advantage is being able to return to the hotel between a museum visit, a bath session and outdoor time without treating each as a separate cross-city excursion.
BKK's M1 serves Hosok tere at Heroes' Square and Szechenyi furdo farther inside the park. From the airport, 100E to Deak followed by M1 is a possible public-transport approach, not a direct hotel service. Compare the exact walk from the station: a hotel beside a busy perimeter road feels different from one facing a leafy avenue. Central Pest restaurants and Danube sights require more journeys from here. Choose the Opera area for a similar M1 connection with a denser evening scene, or the Castle District for historic Buda.
Plan it well: The map pin marks Heroes' Square, not the neighbourhood boundary.
Budapest tourism: City ParkMargaret Island: gardens and a hotel retreat

Margaret Island is a genuine alternative to a street-based city stay, but its small hotel choice makes it a specific decision rather than a default recommendation. Paths, medieval ruins, the Japanese Garden and the musical fountain shape a day outdoors between Buda and Pest. The island's Gastro Promenade adds eating options, although an outdoor venue's seasonal operation should not be mistaken for year-round neighbourhood dining. It suits travellers who value gardens and hotel facilities and are happy to make a deliberate trip into the city for museums or dinner.
BKK bus 26 runs through the island between Nyugati station and Goncz Arpad varoskozpont. Trams 4 and 6 stop at Margaret Bridge for the southern approach, not outside hotels towards the island's north. An airport arrival via 100E at Deak needs another connection; a road transfer should be confirmed with the hotel because island access is controlled. The compromise is separation from Budapest's main restaurant streets and metro stations. Choose central Pest for spontaneous evenings and frequent sightseeing, rather than assuming every island hotel is a short bridge walk away.
Plan it well: The map pin marks Margaret Island, not the neighbourhood boundary.

Airport Express and the final connection
BKK 100E links Budapest Airport with central Pest, including Kalvin Square and Deak Ferenc Square. It uses an airport-specific ticket arrangement. Check the current boarding information and the onward route to your hotel, particularly for the Castle District or Margaret Island.
BKK Airport Express informationUse the relevant district map
BKK publishes separate maps for the city centre, Andrassy Avenue and the Castle District, and Margaret Island. Use the map that matches your hotel, then confirm the current departure in BudapestGO; the closest landmark is not always the most useful stop.
BKK official network and district mapsCastle connections are route-specific
The official Andrassy Avenue and Castle District map shows the 16-series and 216 services with different endpoints. Match the hotel to the stop and direction instead of treating every bus with a castle destination as the same connection.
