We couldn’t get an earlier check-in, even slightly, and 2 pm is quite late. Breakfast was already over at 10. We were also given a “ground floor” room that was basically below ground level.

The complex was quiet, with only about eight people there, but it felt cold and wasn’t family-friendly. The pool area could have been cozier with a little green light by the palm trees. The loungers in both the swimming and wellness areas were awful. They weren’t adjustable, and you couldn’t lie flat, which matters after a sauna. Two saunas were out of use, and the salt cave wasn’t at 35°, so some advertised facilities weren’t provided despite charging full price. Parking and a wellness bathrobe should be free in a four-star hotel, in my view. The restaurant felt like a canteen, not a four-star place. The tables lacked Christmas decorations, arrangements, candles or flowers, and the atmosphere was cold. The chairs were awful too, and scraping them across the floor sounded like a circular saw. There was no felt mat to soften the noise. The ceiling air conditioner blew constantly, making the room too cold and the food cool quickly. Drinks often took too long to arrive. In the room, stink bugs and dead flies were visible on the ceiling light above its cover, which made it look like it hadn’t been cleaned in five months. Not nice to see while lying in bed. The sink wasn’t cleaned on day two. The bedding had only been cleaned superficially, and the pillow got just two handshakes. Breakfast was very modest for a four-star hotel. There was no small bowl for honey, so you had to pour it from the bottle into a coffee cup, glass or plate. The jam, two kinds in plastic cups, wasn’t fresh, and the fruit selection was very limited. There was a toaster, but it wasn’t plugged into 220V. Dinner was better, though often served lukewarm rather than hot. This hotel deserves three stars, not four. The staff seemed overwhelmed.

Szepasszonyvolgy is within walking distance, while Eger city is still close by. We had a few days there recently, and I’d say it’s the best hotel in town. They also serve some great wines.

The pools are nice, the setting is beautiful, and the staff were okay. Eger is a great place to visit, with the town center about 20-30 minutes away on foot. The food felt particularly poor for the price. Breakfast was crowded, had few choices, and wasn’t great quality. The single coffee and juice machine had huge queues when it worked at all. Dinner was somewhat nicer, but the options were still limited. Waiters don’t take your used plate away. If you have soup first, it stays on the table, and you have to juggle things around like a jigsaw to make room for the main course. More than once, I had to get up and move my plate to an unused table or take it to the servers’ area myself. The rooms don’t have the minibar that’s advertised. Each fridge held two bottles of warm water, and the fridges in both rooms we booked barely cooled water to room temperature. That matters because the tap water, though apparently drinkable, is thermal and always warm, so there was no way to get a cold glass in the room. The air conditioning is old, loud and doesn’t cool very well even at full power. I wouldn’t recommend staying here. There are better options for the price, even in the region.

The surroundings are beautiful, but that was the only good thing about this place. Staff were rude, and we found just two employees who spoke English. We booked a regular superior triple room but were put in the attic, in a room with a door connecting to another couple’s room. We could hear everything they did, including peeing. When we asked to move, they said they’d just tell the other guests to be quiet. I’ve no idea how you’re meant to be quiet while peeing. They eventually moved us, but the bed in the new room slanted so much my husband nearly rolled out the whole time. Only three of around nine saunas were working, so we couldn’t enjoy the facilities we’d paid for. We also arranged and agreed to a late checkout for a specific price. The next morning, when I asked what time we had to leave, they said late checkout wasn’t possible and we had to be out within half an hour. We’d planned around staying longer, so I was very unhappy. Breakfast was mediocre at best. I was overcharged too, though I believe that might have been Booking’s fault.
