Donautica Hotel & Restaurant

The one drawback is how far it is from the main roads. Since it’s right on the Danube, you can swim straight from the hotel pool into the river, but the drive there takes some patience. Maybe that’s part of why it feels like a hidden gem. I’m torn about praising it too much, though, because I want to keep being able to book a room there. The kitchen and table service are the stars. The team did a bloody good job, 10/10, and dinner alone is worth coming for. Service was 10/10 too. I stayed just one night in early spring 2025, and the room was 10/10.

We went for a weekend in mid-March, and the weather was around 16 °C in the daytime, lovely for making use of the wellness facilities. The area isn’t large, but it felt just right for the number of guests, even with the hotel full. I loved cooling off in the cold pool before getting into the warm jacuzzi, and the sauna was spacious, clean and at a good temperature. The hotel is smaller than similar places in Hungary, which helps it avoid feeling crowded. The food was delicious, the service was top-quality, and all the staff were super friendly. It really seemed like they enjoyed working there. One highlight was taking a short ride on the hotel’s el-bikes. Donautica is my favorite wellness hotel in Hungary so far, and I’d love to come back in summer, when there looked to be plenty to do in hot weather.

Whenever we’re in Tolna to visit suppliers, we stay here. It’s a great hotel with a lovely view over the water, and there’s a good restaurant on site.

We stayed for two nights in mid-December, when only a few guests were around. The winter weather was quiet and sunny, and the whole place felt peaceful. We’re more used to bigger hotels, so this was a different sort of stay. The staff paid a lot of attention to guests and were extremely friendly. I especially enjoyed dinner, the open kitchen and chatting with the waiter. The food was truly excellent. There are thoughtful details everywhere, from the reading nook in the upstairs corridor and the curved panel behind the piano to the metal mesh around the ambient lighting above reception and the kitchen counter. I liked how the stairs run beneath the wall panels, too, along with the branded furniture. Each room is different. Ours had a lit-up moose head and warm brown touches that suited the winter season. We didn’t make much use of the garden in winter, but the design details carry outside. The hexagonal decking and blower bed pattern stood out to me, and I might do something similar at home. The decking by the river was still a nice place to sit and look at the calm water, even in the cold. We used the outdoor sauna and jacuzzi, which were great in that weather. It’s secluded, and sitting in the sauna in the evening, looking out at the garden and illuminated decking, was a lovely experience. I also liked being able to use the sauna whenever we wanted, without fixed opening hours. It could use some under-warranty repairs, though. A fabulous stay, highly recommend.
