Hostel Maros

The owner kindly let me check in early, which earned the place an extra star for flexibility. I would've given it three otherwise. The listing photos on Booking.com didn't show the whole situation, as often happens with rentals there. I wanted the room beside the bike storage so I could keep an eye on my bike, but was told it was reserved. Nobody ever came, and it stayed empty, so I don't know why I was told that. The fridge was useful and the Wi-Fi worked. There's no AC, so summer heat could be rough, and an open window lets mosquitoes in. The shared bathrooms can get crowded, with basically one shower and two toilets and little privacy. My room was okay. I'm not fussy about a bit of dirt or cobwebs, and I don't need mints on the pillow. I was meant to get a double bed, but got two singles pushed together and made do. A cheap ceiling fan or portable fan would help with the heat and keep mosquitoes away.

We slept really well after our bike trip and felt very comfortable in the room. It's a peaceful area, and Atila was lovely, always smiling and checking that we had what we needed. Eva mamma was lovely too. You can use the washing machine for a reasonable price, and there's a kitchen where you can make your own food. Thanks, and good luck!

I was cycling the Donau Radweg when the route plan sent me 40 kilometres back to Gyor for some reason. It was late in the season, getting dark early, and the route had some difficult stretches to follow in the dark. I still made it to honor my Hostel Maros booking. When I rang the bell, a woman told me in broken German that I was too late. I explained I'd already paid, had worked hard to get there by bike, and would be sleeping outside in below-freezing weather. She didn't seem concerned, shut the window and went back to watching TV. I had a tent and could've camped 40 kilometres earlier, avoiding the ride back the next morning, but I thought I should keep my booking. Instead, I camped in a city park in Gyor and spent the night waiting to be kicked out. I still have to try to get my 30 E back from Cruellla. This place deserves zero.

Attila is a welcoming, knowledgeable host and a great person to spend time with. If you're after a genuine Hungarian welcome in lovely Gyor, I'd highly recommend this place. Thanks, mate!
