The setting is lovely, close to the forest, with wonderful views. The wellness area was nice, the breakfast had a large selection, and you can cast streaming apps to the TV, which seems like something a five-star hotel should offer. Staff were generally nice, some more naturally so than others who seemed to be trying too hard, perhaps because they were new. We had a good time, mostly thanks to the people we were with rather than the hotel. Our first dinner at the Italian restaurant was tasty but felt overpriced. With half board for four, we still paid an extra 60k HUF for one round of drinks and water, though we were charged for a second round too. After the foie gras arrived with some plastic still on it, the server apologized and said the next drinks would be complimentary. They showed up on the bill anyway. We raised it at breakfast and were told they’d remove the charge. There were also letdowns with activities. During Valentine’s Day weekend we were told at check-in that the go-kart event didn’t need a reservation, but by morning all the spots were gone. Sauna events were infrequent and full. The sauna at the back showed 80 degrees but didn’t feel hot, and there were holes through the wall that probably didn’t help. The second dinner was the worst part. Everything took ages: 15 minutes for water, about 90 for steak, then another 15 for dessert. We sent back the pig belly because it tasted off, and all four of us agreed something was wrong with it. After about two hours, dessert finally arrived. The grilled pineapple was nice, two others were OK, but the Basque cheesecake tasted like plain milk, and the passion fruit topping made it worse. The server was apologetic. Other room details were frustrating too. The standard pillows weren’t great, and there are many alternatives at reception, but I only discovered that while looking for the room service menu in a brochure. The menu itself is only on the TV. The bathroom sink tap is so low I could barely fit my fist underneath. In February the room was around 26 degrees despite the cold outside. Adjusting the thermostat or switching from heat to AC did nothing except make noise, so we slept with two windows open. The mood lights by the bed only work with the main overhead light, which defeats the point. The hotel is sponsored by Hell, with its branded products all over, but a 250 ml can of water in the room cost 1400. I get that free marketing drinks might be too much, but charging that much felt like taking advantage of guests. Maybe I’m the only one bothered, or maybe I wouldn’t care if I were very wealthy, but it’s the principle. I also ordered a whiskey sour that cost the same as at a premium Budapest cocktail bar and was just so-so, like the two-for-one happy-hour cocktails we got at college parties for 1500 HUF back in 2010. It wasn’t on the menu and inflation has been high, so perhaps that part’s on me. The bedside lighting setup aside, the fitness area also needs dumbbells heavier than 14kg. It’s a small gym, so it’s not the end of the world, but this is a five-star hotel.

Hospitality doesn’t seem to be the priority here, money does. It’s a hotel with extra land, not a resort, and everything costs extra. The food was average, and that’s generous. There was a 15% service charge for no service. I don’t know how it got five stars, perhaps because of the conference room and 24-hour room service. I can’t imagine who reviewed the restaurant for the guide, unless they were paid off. Maybe they didn’t care because I speak English, but my Hungarian partner also found the staff rude and unhelpful. Questions got shrugs and no interest. We paid for the private pool behind the hotel and weren’t told it closed at 7, so paying for it was pointless. Nothing happens after that, and the place feels dead, which isn’t what you expect from a resort. Reception made us feel like an inconvenience, staff at the club restaurant had no hospitality skills, and housekeeping shouted in the corridors from 8am. It’s overpriced and overrated, barely a four-star hotel in my view. The managers apparently don’t exist, and we were told we might risk getting beaten up if we complained. Give it a miss. There are hundreds of hotels in Hungary with better service for half the price.

The staff stood out most, friendly and attentive, even better than we expected. The whole family loved the go-kart track, which added an unexpected bit of fun. Both on-site restaurants served excellent food with lots of variety. There are three heated pools, two outdoors and one indoors, so they worked in any weather. The indoor pool area, with its sauna and relaxation zone, was a real treat. We had an amazing stay and would highly recommend it to families looking for a fun, relaxing getaway.

There’s a lot of potential here. The hotel is beautiful and surrounded by nature, with plenty to do. The saunas were among the best I’ve tried, and there’s also a heated pool and jacuzzi. Kinga helped with all our problems and was very welcoming. The hotel manager was kind, listened to everything, and had a constructive conversation with us. The restaurant manager was also very nice, and we appreciated his understanding. But most of the other staff were terrible. We twice asked a waiter to bring food without pork, and it arrived with pork. His attitude was completely inappropriate for a five-star hotel. Nobody explained how half board works, and it was confusing, especially since not everyone in the restaurant speaks English. On the first night, we found hair on the sheet and pillow. We changed rooms, but found hair there too. The receptionist brought us ten sheets, and every one had hair on it when unrolled in her presence. We also received cold food at the restaurant. We discussed everything with the hotel manager and appreciated that he listened and spoke constructively with us. We’re confident the problems are being corrected, and hope to return to a changed environment.

I’m updating the review I left here 2-3 years ago because we’re coming back this year. Hopefully I won’t have to get ready for a fight, like some reviews say... just joking 😀 Mr Iain, you seem like you’re probably the most loved guest at all those five-star hotels you say you’ve visited.
