The room was upstairs and had five beds, with shared bathrooms. That arrangement was fine for us, and the place had what we needed. The Zemplén Mountains are lovely for hiking and getting away to relax, and we had no issues with cleanliness or the bed linen. There weren’t any towels, which I can understand if the house might have 20 guests at once and the host would need twice as many on hand. Ventilating was awkward: the building had just one mosquito net, and it wasn’t on our window. We didn’t see mosquitoes or other insects at night, though. The attic room the caretaker showed me had a double door as its only outside window. It could be opened for air, but not closed, and there was only a wooden railing outside. I was uneasy with my three small children there, even though none tried to climb it. On our last evening the hot water ran out when there were hardly any of us, so I ended up with a pretty unpleasant cold shower.

The yard has two dining spots, though it felt like only one was really usable. You can grill and eat outside if you get there first; otherwise there’s a musty living room or a gloomy basement dining room with no airflow and broken lights. We also found the shared kitchen worrying, with the yard door and garden gate often left open, so someone from the street could walk in and take food from the shared fridges. One fridge froze food, had no light, and wouldn’t shut properly. There was no internet, and apparently no signal anywhere in the village. The two little shops nearby have very little, so expect to be isolated. We paid upfront at arrival, but got no receipt or invoice. The caretaker left dirty sheets bundled on the living room sofa for days, and in the mornings we could hear him swearing about how much he hated cats. The living room had two broken feather fans. We had booked a room with a bathroom, but were given a kitchen alcove converted into a room for the same price. It had old, dirty white tiles and a tap that only ran hot water, above an armchair bed. The door wouldn’t stay closed unless locked with a key. The double rooms were cramped sleeping cubicles, with one loose socket in the wall. The place felt very run-down. The walls, covering, furniture, and pictures were disgusting, with the covering pulled off using screws and nails and stains on the curtains that were impossible to identify. We got no towels. On the first day we used the shared hallway bathroom and toilet, which had a see-through glass door, hardly any toilet paper, and no soap. The sink looked ready to fall off, the shower barely had water, and everything was badly scaled. The water kept flowing back and forth. The dish sponge was gross, and the dish soap was nearly gone and watered down. The whole building is open to the street, so people can come and go without asking. It felt like old, plain mass housing from the socialist era, and I wouldn’t call it a guesthouse. Maybe it suits young groups who are team-building, getting drunk, or just need a place to sleep, or kids on a school trip who don’t need much.

After we booked, the accommodation emailed to say the price was about 25,000 HUF, even though both Booking and Trivago showed around 13,000 HUF for three nights for two people. Those sites still showed 13,000 HUF as of the time I wrote this. It doesn’t seem fair, and the listings should be corrected. I can’t see what would justify charging more in such a small village.

It’s quiet enough for complete relaxation since there’s no signal or internet. The place was poorly equipped, with no soap or towels. At least it was clean.

Closed! The guesthouse became private property and is no longer operating.
